Postby Straylight » Tue Jun 15, 2004 10:03 am

1951 Cub
Smokes like a mosquito abatement truck (white)
Not enough power to run the 59 mower, sharp blades, greased spindles,
Compression cold is 90-80-85-80-60
Didn't do the oil squirt test into the cylinders.
Take a look at the valves next?
What should I do, take off the valve cover or remove the head?

Thanks for any suggestions.

STraylight.

straylight, is your cub a 5 cylinder????? that 60 on the end, if it's really cylinder #4, is poor at best. is it oil smoke or water and is there blowby out the filler tube? does your governor cut in quickly under load? is the oil level correct?

If it is white smoke it sounds like a head gasket but I would check cylinder #5 that looks a little low.

yah, it was wishful thinking that I could just unplug #5 and go along with the 4 good ones. I've got a busted wing so my typing isn't too good.

Checked the oil, no water. Checked the radiator and don't see any bubbles. Is definately short on power. The gov doesn't cut in quickly so I think that there may be a problem there also. We unhooked the gov and set the engine speed fairly high by hand and could still not develop enough power to spin up the blades. Without the mower the power is also fairly pathetic.

Yes, one of the 80's of the compression was a duplicate and the last cyl. is 60bs

then it's time to open up the motor, it won't get better. but at the least, sounds like honing, rings and grind the valves. you won't know the extent till yo open her up. fixing the governor is a must, also.

have fun :)
