You are looking in the right direction.

The cub was built/designed as a 1-bottom plow tractor

The A, B, C, 100, 200, 130, 140, 230, 240 tractors were built as 2-bottom plow tractors. All should have a standard 540 rpm rear pto, and some were available with standard 3-point hitch, but early ones had a fast-hitch.

The H, M, 350, 400, 450 machines are 4-bottom plow tractors. Also, they were available with standard 540 rpm rear pto and 3-point hitch, so you should be able to use this machine for bailing hay or other farm chores.

I would lean towards one of the larger tractors with a standard 3-point hitch for farming, that way you will not be limited in the future if you decide you want to do something different with it.

Just to add a few details to the above that Bill said:

The A, B are rated for 1 14" plow
The C is rated for 2 12"
Super C, 100, 200, 140 are rated for 2 14" None of them have 3 point hitch. The Super C was the first tractor to have the Fast hitch. The 100, 130, 140 had the one point fast hitch. the SC, 200, 230 had the two point fast hitch. you can get 3 point convesrions though for the fast hitch.

The H was rated for 2 14"
Super H, M 300, 350 rated for 3 14" or 2 16"
Super M, 400, 450 are rated for 4 14" or 3 16"
The H and M did not have fast hitch yet very nice 3 points are out there to put on them. SMTA - 300 - 350 400 - 450 had fast hitch, live pto etc......

I see you have an H and M selected there, out of the 2 i would go with the H just for use they are great on fuel parts are redible available etc.. I have a H and Super H and love them. The M is a fine tractor to but it will go through more fuel and its harder to steer etc... Not sure how big of a disk or plow you want to pull but the H is sure a fine tractor to do that with. If your plowing 20 ac. go with the H if more than the M.

However.....

My personal opion is try and get a Super C, very nice tractor to work with, you can plow, disk, pull a rake, tedd, pull logs etc... It is very nibble easy to steer go on fuel the list goes on and on to the pros of the Super C. If you want more info on it then let me know or anyother letter series tractor.

Good Luck in your selection let us know how you make out!

A/B/Super A should run with 1-16" ok. A Super A could handle 2-12"s like the C.

The disadvantage to add-on three point hitches is they have no draft control. They don't work well with plows and other ground-digging implements.

Suggest talking to you farming neighbors before purchasing a bigger tractor. Your neighbors will have a very good idea as to your soil type and what equipment you will need.

Suggest visiting your local tractor dealerships and reading the free want ads. This will give you an idea of what's available in your area and a general idea of prices.

Buy a local tractor. You will be able to kick the tires, inspect the tractor and take it for a test drive. Transportation is expensive, specially if you have to move a tractor very far.

$2500- or under. Perhaps.

You didn't state how many acres of land you own. Unless you are planning on going into farming in a big way you may want to consider renting out some or all of the land. Second thought is that it is frequently less expensive to hire a neighbor with the equipment to (let's say) combine than to purchase one and have you dollars sitting 51 weeks a year.
I have an excuse. CRS.

You mentioned baling. If you pull a small square bale, you will appreciate a "live" PTO. This means the PTO will turn even with the clutch press in. This way you can slow or stop the tractor if the baler loads up on a heavy windrow and still leave the baler running. Without a live PTO you have to clutch, shift to neutral and de-clutch before the baler slows down and the repeat to go back in gear. You will have to look at later models to find a live PTO on IH. Something like a 404, which was descended from the "C".

I don't beleive that the 404 had live PTO. You need to get at least to a 300 or something descended from it: 300, 350, 330, 340, 460, 504.

Without some more specifics on amount of acreage to till, how many to bale etc. we can't provide much in the way of recommendations.

Jim, I think I confused the 404 with the 424, which, I believe had live PTO.

I'm not as familiar with the British B-250 based 4x4 models. I beleive a lot of them had a 2 stage clutch.
