Repolarizing Generator

Postby Tom CA Cub '49 » Fri Jul 02, 2004 12:01 am

Well, after months of work, I finally completed the installation of my new radiator and the repainting and reassembly of my "49 cub. The goal is to have it ready to ride in the local 4th of July parade on Sunday.

This evening I realized that I forgot to repolarize my rebuilt generator. (Had the regulator replaced at the same time.)

Now, with the hood, grill, etc., all reinstalled, it looks like I am going to have to tear it down again in order to repolarize the generator. I have looked under the hood and can't really see the correct terminals on the regulator and generator without removing the hood. (Frankly, even with the hood off I am not entirely sure I will be able to ascertain which terminal is the "A" terminal on the generator unless it is clearly marked.)

Here is my question ... is it absolutely essential to repolarize the generator? I am recharging the battery now and plan to try to start the tractor tomorrow afternoon (unless I have to take off the hood again).

Final point: When I picked up the rebuilt generator from my local tractor shop, I asked whether I needed to repolarize the generator and was told that when the generator was rebuilt they did that and it is not required. I suppose that is why I put the entire subject out of my mind until now.

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Tom

If you fire it up and it charges, you're OK.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Well, Bigdog, you were right again. I installed the newly charged battery, pulled the starter and, bam, fired right up! Purrs like a kitten with its new spark plugs and wires. Looks like I am all set for the parade. :D
