Clutch/sline shaft assembly

I am replacing all the bearings in the transmission of my 49 cub. I have the shaft out exept fot the back bearing. On the parts diagram it shows 2 washer type things they call "bearing shields" that fit somewhere near the rear bearing. Well I dont have those on mine are these needed? What are they for? Can I get by without them? (The bearing that went bad was actually the countershaft bearing. If anyone has the parts diagram the washers are numbered 20 and 22 I think. I am trying to get this done soon and appreciate your help!

I did not use them when I rebuilt the transmission on my '49 FCUB. I really don't know why that bearing is shielded....seems you would want the bearing lubed as much as possible. Maybe someone else has a better answer. :roll:

I think the original bearing had a special hole that had to be at the top so lubrication could come from the gravity gallery. They're often installed with the wrong orientation, so the bearing is more likely to fail.

Whoever worked on my '51 last had a unique solution to the noise from that bearing... leave it out. I don't know how successful it was because I never ran the tractor before I rebuilt it, but I'm sure it wasn't noisy. That's why I now try to at least run a tractor before doing any serious work to it.

Come to think of it, that may be why I didn't put the shields back on. The new/replacement bearing did not have a hole in it for lubrication.
