hydraulic filter

im going to check the hydraulic filter on my 55 , ive never checked one before, anything i need to do or look for ? thanks

Just wipe everything down well before you open the case. Keep it clean. If the filter is bad it will be obvious.

is it a replacable filter ? or do you just clean it ? also where on the tank is it ? thanks for the help

Take the bottom plate off the unit. You will find either a large screen mesh filter or the remnants of one. If it's in reasonable condition you can clean it.

you take out from the under side of the unit ? should i have a new gasket to replace on the plate ? thanks mike

you may take it out form there (bent double), but you need to remove the head plate to install.

It's rare to find one that can be cleaned and re-used... at least in my shop. They are usually pretty badly broken up.

Here's what I think happens: The filter does its job and gets pretty much plugged. Then the suction causes it to collapse. They don't have to collapse very far or very often before they split from one end to the other.

Be prepared to replace it.

I would recommend that you use a bead of some sealant on the bottom gasket...

And DO NOT torque it to the specs in the manuals!!! They are too high for those itty bitty bolts. I'd replace those bottom bolts with grade 8, and torque no more than 20-25 ft lbs IIRC.

SS is correct about the incorrect torque specs. GSS-1411 says the bolts for the TC cylinder block head plate should be 45 ft-lbs. That's way too high. I think maybe someone was thinking about engine head bolts when they wrote that. Should be more like 20 I believe.

BTW, you do not need to remove the bottom plate at all to just check/replace the filter screen, just the cover plate. You do need to take the cylinder block off the tractor, which will mean taking the manifold tubes off. You will probably need a new gasket for that. Also install a new gasket for the cover plate, like the others suggested.

I've drained my TC system, and after looking on here I discovered that there is a filter in the block. I'm unsure though where to get a filter for it, and I'm guessing I'm going to need more than just a filter. (I'm thinking about gaskets here, but I don't know which ones I would need.)

You can get the rebuild kit from TM TRACTOR but the filter will have to come from an IH dealer. I just ordered on from Columbia tractors that Tom at TM recommended. The filter is $60 plus shipping
