Industrial A

Postby jlcross81 » Sun Mar 16, 2008 6:36 pm

Did the engines on the industrial take a bigger piston, or was it a standard piston like that of a normal A?? I am overhauling my IND A and one of the pistons was smaller than the rest (probably why it was blowing oil). I went to NAPA and he gave me 3 1/8 pistons, but they are what I call POP - UP pistons, and there does not look like there will be any clearance between the top of the piston, and the head, and spark plug.

The Farmall "A" had 3" pistons originally; the Industrial "A" was the same. Later, IH offered the 3 1/8" to increase power. IH also had FIRECRATER pistons with the domed top to increase compression and power. Most of the after-market pistons are fire crater-style. Usually on these wet-sleeve engines, you buy the replacement pistons, rings, and sleeves as a set.

You may want to check with your IH dealer, and make sure they will fit.

Yes I will. We checked the Sleeves and they were for a 3 1/8 inch, And NAPA ordered the pistons from a IH dealer. One other question is there anywhere on the internet to order a set of sleves??

Most available now are probably 3 1 /8 inch. Check the outside diameter of the lower part of the sleeves (at the o-ring seal). If it is the same as the old ones, they will fit right in. There are several places (internet and otherwise) that are also capable of supplying both the right one and the wrong one.
