so, thanks to YOU ALL ;^) i have this fever to find all the old Farmall tractors in my area... sort of a territorial thing, i guess

anyway, i passed this one recently. after a couple drive-bys, i met a man who was exiting the house on the property where the tractor sits. the old guy said he wasn't the owner, but keeps an eye on the owner's place while he's in Florida. said the guy was coming back in a month.

anyway, he said that he himself (not the owner) had been approached probably 20 times in the past 10 years about whether it was for sale, and he says that the owner won't part with it.

it's pretty far gone, as far as i can tell (i also have many additional pics):

i'd like to know several things:
1. how far gone is it?
2. what the heck is that implement? in my experience, i've never seen a right-side implement lifted by a cable which goes through to the lef side!?!
3. why are the wheels configured in such a way? left wheel's weight is mounted inside, right-side is "normal"
4. what do i take to reduce the FEVER ????

That is a very early Super A (Serial Numbers began at 250,000) with an AI-23 Highway mower installed. That mower was used for mowing right-of-ways. I believe the cable allowed the hydraulics to lift the cutter bar.

It looks to be in original condition. It would be nice to get some close up pictures of the decals that could be read.

Can't answer all you questions, but it is a nice looking Super A. Now, if you can just talk him into selling it to you, your fever will drop about one tenth of one degree.

there aren't any decals on it, unless they're underneath where i didn't look. there's one on a "mounting pad", but it's so old & worn, i'm afraid that it can't be discerned:



where should i look?
any ideas about why the wheels are configured such? is it just the way that the implement needed the "setup" to be? what else should i look for on this tractor?

Agree with what has been said. The highway mower was typically mounted on an International Super A although this one happens to be a Farmall. The left rear tread is set as IH recommended for highway mowing.

Bit of trivia: There is a special left side Touch-Control arm for the mower lift cable. The Ertl toy Super A has the mower arm rather than the standard one. Evidently the tractor they used for their model once had a highway mower.

Whoever mounted this mower evidently didn't have the special arm and made do with the standard one plus a home-made attachment.

yep, i feel the same. but, i'll work on him... maybe, i'll find a friend! i guess the deal might be that he knows he's got a gem, there... with a serial # of < 1000 (250867, i think 'tis), and with the extra TC lever, weights, et cetera, etc., maybe he just can't seem to part with it.

Looks like a $500 Super A.

Not far gone at all. Pretty good shape for being in the elements for more than ten years. (wouldn't look as good as that here in Florida) All Super A's have two TC levers. One to raise the front, one to raise the back. Jim was refering to the lift arm mounted to the left side of the tractor. The only thing special about this tractor is the mower, but it looks like it is missing the entire bar. Maybe it was removed and stored away? I agree with 'schmibm', a $500 tractor.
