Cub engine rebuild kits

Postby BvilleJoe » Sat May 03, 2008 11:40 am

Just started going through a 1950 Cub that a neighbor gave me for free. Tractor is complete and in fair condition. Valves were all stuck bad due to having no cap on the muffler as it sat out in a field for ten years. Took the head off to get a better look and get the valves unstuck. Pistons and bores look to be in good shape but did not do a compression test. So it definitely needs valves and a valve job and possibly a full rebuild after I get it torn down more.
I started looking around for engine rebuild kits and engine parts at the site sponsoring retailers but could not find a full rebuild kit. Do you have to piece parts together or is there a full kit available someplace. Also, is there anybody who supplies a rebuilt shortblock. One place that i found is agkits.com, they are local to me since I am in Syracuse NY and appear to have decent prices. Has anyone dealt with them before? Here are some links to there rebuild kits:

http://www.agkits.com/index.asp?PageAct ... ProdID=859

Thank in advance, I am looking forward to learning from the members on this board.

Joe, looks like you got a nice, workable tractor to restore. I see it still has the hand lift attached. Sometimes they're missing. The custom seat rest and exhaust is different. :D

Check that block for cracks or welds, especially by the ear where it bolts to the front. If it is cracked or welded don't waste your money on rebuilding it. You will want a different block.

Since it is a 1950, you might want to check your serial number to see if you really got lucky and ended up with a Demo Cub. Those were between serial #'s 99536 and 106511.

I agree with Ron about checking with our sponsors. You can't go wrong with them.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Looks a lot better than some I've owned. Congratulations. I looked at the rebuild kits and valve kits you linked and they are very reasonably priced from what I have seen. I've just bought one rebuild kit in my life but can't remember the price of it because I put $1265.00 in the engine counting the machine shop work too. The complete kit may have some things you don't need. I am picking up rings, rod bearings, main bearings, and a rebuild gasket kit Tuesday from NAPA for $250.00. I can get these things cheaper on the net, but I like the convenience of being able to take something back if it is wrong or getting my money back if I wind up not needing it. This block is all standard and I have plenty of standard pistons with rods. It's cheaper ordering final drive bearings and things of that nature from one of our board sponsors though. Tear it down and clean it good and inspect it, then make a decision on what you need. And good luck.

Tear into it and see what you got. Then just buy what you need. May not need much more than a gasket set, rings, and bearings.

Welcome to the BEST forum on the whole WWW!! This is a great place to learn about our favorite tractor and to make some great internet friends.

If you are starting with a "Free" tractor, then the money put into getting it going is easier to take! I bought a $500.00 tractor last year and am in the installment plan on it now myself. By the way, the installment plan is "Install this replacement part, then INSTALL this replacement part, then ..."
You get the picture. Also, each "installment" comes with a price tag.

Some of the best advice given to me was by George Willer. Get that cub running and ride it around...It will whisper to you what it needs. Well, I can tell you that mine sometimes whispered and sometimes YELLED what it needed!

You are gonna have a blast...I DID (and still am!)...

I do have to echo what the folks said in earlier posts. You might want to update your profile to list your State, then City... Sometimes folks live so darned close that if you get stuck, they will drop what they are doing and stop over to help!!

Enjoy!
