Thanks guys, for all the good thoughts and prayers. And you guys are right: I'd rather smash my thumb with a hammer than to see the kids at risk.

Jeanine and I went to see the little guy last night, and he was amazing. The doctors had in effect given him a sugar blast and he was basically wired, but still behaving. Since his first episode a month ago, he's gotten used to the finger-prick blood tests. So when the nurse came in to test him, little Carson stuck his index finger in the sky, and was all smiles!

Ole Pops got to pull him around in a big reg wagon, and I think he made one nurse's whole shift when he gave her a BIG Bear Hug!

The endocrinologist told my daughter the little guy's not going home until they figure out what's wrong, so thanks again for your thoughts and prayers!

Charles:

Count on it. Prayers are on the way for little Carson.

Sounds like JD.. Long story.. we just met a mom whose daughter was diagnosed with Infant Juvenile Diabetes at 11 months old. That is how it was discovered... difficulty waking the youngun up, would pass out often etc... One blessing is that it is treatable and manageable.

Our prayers are with you both and with Carson and his family.

Peace (+)

Update on Corky's Carson

Postby Corky's Cub » Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:20 am

Hey guys,

Thanks again for all the kind words.

My little buddy is still at the hospital, and unfortunately they don't know anything more than they did when they admitted him. But now I guess the bean counters are taking over, and they are talking about releasing him with more specific home monitoring instructions because apparently they can't do the kind of tests they need to do until he's in danger again. :?

This makes no sense to me, but does remind me that doctors are no different than mechanics, plumbers, farmers, or computer folks: the only time they can fix something is when they can see the problem in action. Yes Rudi, it does seem like some sort of hypoglycemia or juvenile diabetes...but apparently there's something different about this little guy that makes it harder to pin down.

That frustrates me, but we'll have to rely on the doctors' superior knowledge (guided by God's hand, as Donny so eloquently says), in these things and hope my daughter will be able to monitor it closely enough not to have another dangerous situation arise. But that's kinda hard when no one can tell her what brings it on or when.

The bright thing is that throughout all the poking and prodding, ole Carson has been quite the charmer...but being in a small hospital room with no place to play has him ready to stretch his legs!

I told my daughter that parenthood is not for sissies, and this is just a perfect example...and she has handled it well. We will see, and thanks again for your thoughts and prayers!

There's No Place Like Home!

Hey guys,

I'm happy to report that my little buddy Carson is home from the hospital, and is very happy to be reading in the comfort of his own bathroom! :big smile:

As you can see from Carson's big smile, you'd never know he's been in trouble this week! Although the doctors have not agreed on a diagnosis, they're pretty sure it's either juvenile diabetes, or a rare genetic disorder called MCAD, which produces essentially the same symptoms.

Either way, they apparently can't nail it down until he has another episode, and blood testing is done in the midst of the emergency, while his blood glucose levels are dangerously low. That'll be a trick, but hopefully the doctors have given my daughter a good plan for monitoring and response.

Thanks for everyone's good thoughts and prayers...we will see!

Years from now he's really gonna thank you for that picture!  Get that boy a subscription to Red Power Magazine! He needs proper material for the "Reading Room"!

We'll continue to hold the little fella up in our prayers. I hope the docs get a handle on things soon.

Lucky for me, it was my daughter (Carson's mom) who actually took that picture! I thought it was a riot, and had to post it for you guys.

But I'm sure I know where she got the idea: I have a picture of HER at about the same age in a similarly compromising situation!

Thanks again, and when we know somethng, I'll post an update.

Charles:

Glad that Carson is home and on the mend so to speak. If is it JD, it is very manageable.. not sure what MCAD is.. hopefully it also is manageable. Lots of love and a little bit of spoiling will go a long way to making him a happy camper even during the hardest days.

You are absolutely right when you told your daughter..

It is probably one of the hardest jobs physically, mentally and definitely emotionally that a person can have. My daughter Amanda is exhausted... Abby is definitely lactose intolerant and most likely also allergic to milk -- which makes it hard. She is trying to continue nursing, but it may be a done deal now... Abby is responding to Isomil - a soy product (that and ProSobee Em and I used for our 4 daughters who are also lactose intolerant), so maybe she will get some sleep. She was saying how little sleep she has gotten since Abby was born.. So I said to her "Get used to it, and welcome to the next 70 years of your life" :!:   :D :D

Parenthood is hard, but it is the most rewarding things you can do in life next to being a soul mate to your spouse. Next bestest thing after that is being a Grampa :big smile: Oh, she and Clay are getting some sleep tonight, cause Abby is staying with Memere und Opa :!:

Rudi,

Wow...your little Abby is testing the limits already...mom and dad will have to raise her up strong!

...And it's Memare and Opa's job to make sure she grows up sweet! :D

Thanks Bill.

My little buddy is still having the problems with blood sugar, but his parents have settled into a routine of testing and monitoring so he doesn't get into the dangerous zone without them knowing it's on the way. The doctors are still undecided about diagnosis, with the family doctor leaning towards Juvenile Diabetes, and the specialist still pointing to abnormalities which suggest more serious--but as yet unidentified--problems.

Through it all, Carson has been a bright and shining smile; a neat little kid with a monstrous sense of humor, competitive drive, and a smile to beat the band. We just got back from a week's vacation with my daughter and her husband, and it was heartwarming to see (almost 4 year old) Tyler watch out for his "liddle brudder Carson".

Thanks for your thoughts...we've all been there, and I'm glad the kids are the parents now!
