Cub drive gears too slow//fast??

OK You Guys You have me convinced!! I really should appreciate the cub for what it can do and not how much I want it to do. I guess I thought 3rd gear was great while cuttin grass,although it did beat me to death while cuttin.
I mean, I can actually get a good clean cut in 3rd gear......I just think that somewhere in between 2nd and third would be OK.

I'm not tryin to say anything bad about the cub because I would not own 2 of them if I did not like them.
But I will respect what ya'll are saying about the speed thing!!

Hey, no offense intended If it is working for you, go for it. I agree that it would have been great if a lot of the old tractors had been designed with a wider spread of gearing. The listed speeds for my '38 M-H 101 are 2.4, 3.36, 4.5, and 17.3 mph. Talk about a jump betwen 3rd and 4th! I guess the engineers finally figured it out in later years.

There were 2 different versions of 2nd speed. You didn't mention the age of your tractors so I don't know if you have the faster or slower. In 1955, 2nd was slowed down by about 9%.

I agree it would be nice, but personally I would rather have a gear about 1/2 the speed of first,.

Same difference as what I said about earlier/later Farmalls. The Farmalls changed when the Lo-Boy came out.

I TOO SOMETIMES WISH A SPEED JUST A LITTLE FASTER THAN 2ND. WOULD BE JUST RIGHT ON MY WIDE OPEN AREAS (NO TREES, ETC; ).
I HAVE 12 ACRES TO MOW AND GET IN A HURRY AT TIMES. I DO MOW 2/12CRES IN AN HOUR AND 10. MINS. IN 2ND.THOUGH.

THAT BRINGS UP A QUESTION: IF I MOW ALMOST MAXIMUM IN 2ND. IS THERE ANY DANGER OF BLOWING THE ENGINE? SHOULD I REDUCE THE SPEED ONCE IN AWHILE. ALSO THE TEETH IN THE THROTTLE PLATE ARE
WORN AND HARD TO KEEP THROTTLE ROD ENGAGED. ANY IDEAS ON WAY TO FIX ??

Hart, the C-60 will run all day long at max rpms. Take a look at the throttle arm as well as the quadrant teeth. If the lip on the throttle arm is grooved & worn it can be welded up and ground back into shape. The teeth on the quadrant plate can be filed a little deeper with a triangular file to increase engagement.

That doesn't always solve the problem. The last new one I bought the edges of the teeth were rounded and a goo lever woud still slip. Out came the Dremel, for a little reshaping.

You also have to change the gear it engages.

As John said, you can do it as long as you change the pair of gears. Separate question as to whether you will notice maybe a quarter MPH speed difference.
