184 - What's it worth

Postby Bill Hudson » Thu Jul 03, 2008 2:07 pm

Folks,

I just saw a 184 and I need your help. After I stopped it started to pour, so I did not get to spend a lot of time looking/evaluating the Cub. To help determine its worth, here is what I observed:
-front blade, mounted on Cub
-rear 3-point Woods finish mower, mounted on Cub
-straight tin and very good original paint
-tires looked real good
-owner says it was OH about two years ago
-no camera with me, so no pics

What is your best estimate of value? I realize that I'm not giving you much to go on.

i would say 2000 on the very lo end , but it sounds as though it is pretty nice so its worth more than that but as we all know its what you are actually willing to pay .

I just found a 154 with no attachments for $1,800. Some are hitting up to $3,500 but i'm not sure if there selling at that price.

To me these are way better than the throw away mowers there selling now thats why they have been around for so long.

It's a water cooled engine that will last longer than the WalMart specials. I had a 185 that mowed great. One thing I never understood however, is it seems a high percentage of Cub Loboys have blowby out the breather compared to their bigger brother. I have asked a couple of folks how had no answer. I had the 185 rebuilt & it still came back. A friend has prolly had 10-12 & only one had none. Any insight?

Could it have anything to do with the lack of a breather tube between the air cleaner and the crankcase?

Have you cleaned the oil filler cap? Its a breather too. I have some blowby but very little.

I was a mechanic for many years and learned on the 50 & 60's cars that had breather tubes. Its the norm to see a little blowby or should i say vapor comming out of the tube.

I would make sure the oil cap breather is clean or it will try to intake and exhaust thru the breather pipe. The system needs to breathe too. On the older cars we would clean the breather caps at every oil change it was part of the service. We would soak them in kerosene or gasoline to clean them. Remember to blow them with air from the inside(center) out thru were it would take in air. Don't push the dirt inside by blowing it from the outside in.

For a 184, good paint with 3pt, 3pt mower, and blade, i would be willing to go as high as $2700 or even more ifn i needed to . The 184 is the only one of the number seris i would buy. i had a beautiful that had a 3pt and creeper gear, and paid 2800 for it. it only had a c-3 mower on it. But i traded it for my first demo and a bunch of implements and a bunch of work and a bunch of money.
