Anyone know of an alternative for PTO pulley for the cub 22 mower?

Not to sound like a smart :censored: , but my impression is a pulley is a pulley. An original IH pulley is going to be expensive. A new pulley of the same size and measurements is also going to be expensive. Maybe someone wiser than me can provide more perspective.

I'm sure this is more complicated than you have in mind........

This was on my very first Cub, an early '47. The pulley had been run loose so the pulley itself and the shaft splines were badly worn. To make up for the wear someone drove nails between to make up for the wear and the pulley wobbled badly. It tore up the belt that ran over jockey pulleys.

The shaft was then turned netween centers and the pulley bored accurately enough to clean up both surfaces. Then a steel bushing was made with close fitting ID and OD. A single key was made up to fit keyways made in the shaft and pulley and through a slot cut in the bushing. End of problem.

As an aside, I also made up the jackshaft and shaft drive for the Bolens 54" mower.

John: The hub of the PTO mower pulley is elongated (see picture archive at TM Tractor). This elongation is needed to place the PTO pulley in line with the driven pulley of the mower. I have a nice pulley of the proper size and with the correct spline number but it will not work in conjunction with the cub 22 mower. The hub is too short to place the pulley at the correct location. TM Tractor Parts has good photos and explanation about this. On that site, click "New Parts", then "PTO". I did finish fabricating a substitute pulley yesterday. Started with a mental picture and just the concept. Learned some things while securing components and during the building process. Not fast, not quick, not low cost. I think it will perform very well. The IH price for new is not really a ripoff. I might later collaborate with Bigdog to post photos and commentary on the pulley.

Now I have a question along this same line. A B42 belt is apparently the proper one to use with the 4" pulley. Grainger has (at least) two belts that appear to be suitable. Their 5L450 is 3/8" thick, while their 3X636 is 7/16" thick. The slightly thicker (by 1/16") belt is considerably higher cost. Anyone know if the 5L450 is adequate for this application?

I have the napa b42 and a b43. they both work just fine with adjustment. the B=3/8" I understand with the 42 and 43 being dif length.

I also have a narrower notched belt the same length that works just fine, but slips a little in heavy stuff. but the way I like fence posts, slipping might not be all that bad. :big smirk: would save on pitmans. :D

Dan,

I know a single pulley with the splined bushing wont line up, But mabe a two or three belt pulley would. I priced one from Case and it is $124.00 and two week delivery, I need it sooner thasn that so trying to find an alternative. I would think that a three grove pulley and a splined bushing would be cheaper than 124.oo from a berang distributer. I will find out tomorrow.

John: I had not thought of using a multibelt pulley. That might place the outermost pulley at the correct position to line up with the pulley on the mower. Let us know if that works. In the meantime, I will be back in touch if I get a used pulley of the type needed. Dan

Trying the two-belt pulley on my tractor results in the (outer) upper pulley being about 5/8" in too far for good belt alignment. I have not found a three belt pulley for the "H" series split bushing. In my opinion, the split bushing must be fully seated on the PTO shaft to grip properly.

IH listed the belts as 13/32 depth. I doubt that the 1/32 less would make much difference. By the way, the full entry says:

early 452197R1 21/32 wide 46 1/4 long 13/32 thick
late 457292R1 45 1/2 long, otherwise the same.
Note that the length is listed as outside circumference which would be a little long than the usual length measurement for v-belts.

The L-22 uses 457191R2 which is 40 long.

Busdriver,
I used a 4 grove pully with a taper lock, but it wont stay tight and a key wont fit in in the splines. I will search for a 3 or 4 grove that will fit the h splined bushing

http://www.emerson-ept.com/eptroot/clim ... 50-157.pdf In the lower right corner of page 4 of 8 (153) of this pdf file is the bushing that fits the Cub, Table No. 3. Woods mower dealers have it available with a Woods part number. I do not have that part number at hand at the moment. The BK40H pulley is the nearest match to the Cub 4" pulley. 2BK40H is the two-belt pulley. For those who already have a "belly" mower, the PTO driving pulley for it may well use that split taper bushing and purchasing another bushing is unnecessary. My #22 mower had some end play in the flywheel shaft so I purchased some assorted thickness bronze thrust washers from McMaster-Carr. None available with both the desired ID and OD. So I bought the correct OD and bored the ID for the shaft and shimmed the shaft behind the pulley. As a result the pulley on the flywheel shaft on my mower may be slightly farther to the rear than on mowers with lesser wear. For V-pulleys, perfect alignment is highly desirable. But experience tells me that no more than 1/8" misalignment will not be a serious problem for this belt length. For me, 5/8" misalignment is a serious problem.

I just pulled one off the new Cub and was going to sell it since I don't have a need for it... Seems there a demand, but I don't want to overcharge. Seems to be in great condition.

What would be a fair price for it??
