Flail or Finish?

Postby Alwaysoily » Sat Aug 21, 2004 11:35 am

I was wondering if any one has any experience between the two belly mowers. I was planning on purchasing one or the other and I wanted to know what was best for my use. The lawn I am cutting is around my house, a normal nice lawn that I was looking to get a clean cut(not a horse field cut). I thought I would already rule out the 42in brushhog style, but still not sure. I know that this topic is going to set everyone off on their own opinion, but just wanted to know the difference in the style of mowers. Thanks
BTW exhanged the new regulator for another and now it charges fine. Thanks Jim you were right

Flail Or Finish

Postby Elmer Fields » Sat Aug 21, 2004 11:55 am

I have been mowing my lawn with a mott flail mower for probably 40 years. I also pull a lawn sweeper behind it and it does a finish job. I just put a new set of blades on it and now it's even better.

I have a flail, and used to own a 42c, as well as using a 59 when I worked at the local hospital. The rotaries, either the 42 (brush hog type) or the 59 inch will both do a great job of making an even cut. The 42 has an advantage that if you get into heavier cutting it is smaller, and if you hit something the baldes will pivot like a brush hog, but if the blades are sharp it will give a very smoot cut. The flail will give nearly as smooth a cut as the rotaries, but it doesn't chop the grass up as fine, so if you want a golf course look you will need to use a sweeper as Elmer mentioned. A flail has a second advantage that if you hit a rock or stick with it the object won't be thrown out the side, it just rolls out the back.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I use my 42 on our 1/2 acre lot in town. The neighbors don't complain, but you should see the looks I get when I am up on the boulevard!!

I use a CLF 59 on my Loboy, and the neighbors say the lawn looks like a pool table. I don't use a sweeper or catcher of any type.

Thanks Guys! I think John answered my question about mulching the grass with a rotary. Never used a flail but sounds interesting if I had to do mowing with alot of debris in the way. But here is one more question about mowers, is the Woods L59 as good as the old International C3 or are they both about the same cut? (not to mention the different cuts they take at your wallet!!!!) Thanks again.

I've never used a C3, but before I had my CLF59 I used my Cadet 108 which also did a nice job, but not as good as this Woods. I think the finished result is about as good as you can get without bagging/catching. I'll be mowing this morning, and will send a pic if you like...

Regardless of the mower you use, the quality of the mowing job is determined almost completely by how well you maintain the blades.

Here are two photos of the lawn 24 hours after mowing (they're a little large to post here):

My lawn is hardly a golf course, but you may get an idea of how the mower works. Here's the weapon, a '55 Loboy...
