Regulator location? New wiring harness wrong?

Postby Buzzard Wing » Mon Aug 23, 2004 8:54 pm

I bought a replacement wiring harness and now I am puzzled about the 'fit'. (took me a while to figure them out by the old ones)
My machine is a 71 (12V) and the black wire comes out of the LEFT light loom (goes to the + on the coil) and the two wires from the regulator to the alternator (yellow and blue) join the loom at the regulator/coil area and come out at the RIGHT light loom. The ground for the lights also is out the right light and the original was attached to the front bolt of the generator bracket, this one will not reach that bolt now.

At any rate, the old wires from the generator to the regulator were not part of the loom (about 12" long). Also the black wire must take the long way home around the upper radiator hose etc, when it could have just come out at the regulator with the other wires.

Is it possible that this was intended for another machine?? I hate to cut open the loom to make the wire routing more reasonable, especially since the other owner said that it was a waste of $75...... It would have been easier to just run new wires that I could have made up!!!

Oh yea..... it does run with the new harness!
I am a little proud of that! (had to rewire the trailer to pick the Cub up too!)

Buzz, it is possible that you have the wrong harness. There were several configurations.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

The correct harness for your cub should be 387262R91 or 404353R1 not sure if they are still avaliable from CIH

Ah, ha. apparently I have the wrong one! What I got was 404354R1. I just got off the phone with the fellow at Carter and Gruenwald and it turns out the one I need is cheaper by $20.

Thanks wireharness, you sure know your stuff!
Now I just need to figure out how to get at the governor.... are they serious about taking the whole casting off??? Holy cow!

You guys are awesome!

Thanks... I am not in a hurry to take the boulster off.
Mostly I am just looking to clean that area. With the generator off it is reasonably easy to get in there.

I may have questions about the governor after I get it clened up and painted.
