How to re-badge from "donor" to original?

Postby allenlook » Mon Aug 30, 2004 5:59 pm

UPS guy showed up today with the front bolster, er, I mean the steering gear housing. :D :D :D Thanks David (Chown)!

Now the big challenge will be resisting the urge to just slap it on and get everything else back together and try to start 'er up! :D

Yipeee!

Now, how do I get the "donor" tag off so I can put my "original" one back on? I don't see anything in the service manuals about that (not like it would be an expected service item, I suppose)...

Take a small putty knife and carefully work it under the tag and slowly work it towards each corner gently prying upward.

Rivets?

Postby allenlook » Mon Aug 30, 2004 6:05 pm

Thanks BD,

Is it just riveted on somehow? And, so can I expect some serious rust back there?

Mine was rusty and after cleaning I took my hand grinder and smoothed all the rough casting bumps before painting so the tag will be flat on smooth surface.
Then came Bronson

Yes they are just rivets.

When you have worked the putty knife in... from the opposite side until it touches the shank of the rivet, then drive another in right under it. The extra thickness will start the rivet on its' way out. The distortion to the tag will be minimal, and the rivets can be re-used.

I found this little doo-dad to be very useful in "brad" or rivet removal.
Came with a pack of el-cheapo screw drivers from a truck load tool sale.
Worked perfect for this job.

No, that's not a crack you see. Seems like a mold mark.

Most hardware stores sell them as tack pullers.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
