Uneven Mating Surfaces of Carb

I have filed high points to improve the mating surfaces of the upper and lower parts of the carb. I followed this by placing four small washers between the parts with the washers being held in place by the four screws. I then used C-clamps between the screws in an attempt to improve the fit of the two halves. This did improve the fit but I still have air leakage and the motor does not run smoothly. I believe that I can eliminate, or at least reduce, the leakage by using two gaskets, rather than one, between the surfaces. Will adding the extra thickness of a second gasket interfere with proper functioning of the carb? Your advice will be appreciated. Dan

Dan,

Don't use two gaskets it will not work. The gaskets are quite thick and will cause much problem...float height and leakage.

Are both halves of the carb tweaked? If it's just the bowl you can use some emory cloth on a flat surface to lap it flat. Make sure you use a figure 8 motion when lapping to ensure an even surface. If the throtle body is warped then we will go another route.

As Donny suggested. lap it. That should improve the fit tremendously. If it is the upper section, again, judicious use of a good file should help as well. Just one or two strokes at a time. Remember - Take Your Time! Yup, it is time consuming and labourious, but it certainly will pay off. Besides - it is fun

Donny: Harold had mentioned recently that the two of you might meet at my place and that the Cub would be running, and running smoothly, when you left. I am sixty-eight years of age, have taught at junior high, senior high and university level in three states, have made lots of friends during that time but I have never before associated with a group of people who so willingly give of their time and knowledge to help a fellow forum member. To come to Waldo would require a four hour drive for you and two to two and a half hour drive for Harold and that is one way only. In my rather inept way I am saying that I really do appreciate that the two of you would do this. I have suggested to Harold that I make every effort to solve the problems using advice from the two of you and other forum members before asking you to give up a weekend. I am half-way there as the cub is running but it misses and huffs and puffs quite a bit. This may be corrected when I get the carb problems worked out. If not, I may be contacting you and Harold.
