Smokin'...

Postby allenlook » Sat Sep 11, 2004 8:01 pm

How much smoke is reasonable?

Jay starts up with a little light smoke, just for a few seconds, and then runs great... After idling a while he'll develop a little smoke out the exhaust pipe, and sometimes a little out the oil breather.

I figure it's about normal, he's not burning any oil to speak of, but never had a Cub before so I thought I'd better ask.

Sounds pretty normal for a 50 year old machine.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

My 48 work tractor is beginning to do the same thing over the last couple years. Of course it was last overhauled in 1987. One thing you might check is that the small copper pipe be tween the breather and the front of the block is clear. also check the fittings it screws into at each end.

you are part of the problem!!!

Small pipe

Postby allenlook » Sat Sep 11, 2004 8:28 pm

I did re-do the breather, but I didn't check the pipe to see if it was clear. I thought it was dripping oil from that pipe or a fitting at first (*really* hard to see up in there), but I haven't seen any since the first time Jay was run really good.

How would it being blocked make the engine smoke?

It sucks air through the block so that any oil fumes or vapor are sucked through the carb and burned, in much the sam way a PC valve on a car works.

Cool!

Postby allenlook » Sat Sep 11, 2004 8:36 pm

Very cool! I didn't realize that was what it was for, I figured it was a re-cycler or a re-breather of some kind, but I figured it was more for liquid or aerosolized oil than for fumes.

Rick, they are referring to the oil bath air cleaner.
