PTO repair

I'm going to have to replace the shaft in the trans that drives the PTO. My question is what is involved in this repair ? Do I have to split the tractor ?
Does it come out the front or rear ? Thanks Mike

Do you mean the transmission spline shaft or the PTO shaft itself :?: 8)

It's the shaft in the trans going to the PTO.

That would be the transmission spline shaft. In that case you do have to split the tractor. The shaft is removed from the front of the tranny. Once the tractor is split you will see a bearing retainer with 3 bolts. Remove the bolts and pull the shaft out. The slider gears will drop off. It may take 3 hands to get it back together.

By splitting in this instance Donny means between the transmission and the torque tube, rather than the engine and torque tube. Requires removing the floor pan.

You'll have to remove the shifter from the top of the transmission - You'll also have to remove the shift forks and rods from the top of the transmission. (That makes reinstalling the sliding gears alot easier)

Just watch the shift rail springs and poppit ball bearings when you pull out the shift rails. I find it easier to drive out the rails from the front of the trans out into the differential case. There are two pressed in disc in the front of the trans housing in the holes for the shift rails - these will need to be taken out to remove the shift rails.

It's not a bad job; but, it does take a few hours to do.

:D Thanks for the Info . Doesn't sound to bad, I just need the time now.Who has the best price on the parts my IH dealer wants $235.00for the shaft and $75.00 for the collar . Also other then some gaskets is there anything else I'll need. Mike

I just bought the gaskets from my local IH dealer for all three that you would need for $7.62.

With a ball peen hammer and $7.00 worth of material you can make your own gaskets for the whole tractor less the engine. 8)

Gaskets can be made by placing the gasket material over the surface to be gasketed and tapping around the edges of the surface with the hammer. the ball peen is used for the holes.

Made many a gasket that way. Saved a lot of trips to town and downtime in the fields.
