Rust
I have been working on MY Missey for the last couple of weeks and I have learned the following. Parts for Cub can be had, several good suppliers out there. Also I learned that I need some tools, got a impact wrench and beefed up my socket sets and other hand tools. Cann't justify a torch or welder just now but who knows about the future. Manuals and parts book are a must. What I have really learned is that my biggest enemy is rusted bolts and studs. These are the source of my greatest fustration and also give me the greatest satisfation when I score a point. Penatrating oil, heat, patience, left twist drill bits, cheater bars are now my best allies. Just curious, am I alone in figuring rust as my worst enemy here or is this a comman fustration. Also helpful hints in this battle are welcome.

Snapped the head off of the gooseneck on Ellie
Next time I get close to a good welder and have my mig fixed up with gas, gonna weld a nut to what is left and hopefully get it out.
Since I have gotten Ellie, the only other collection aside from the implements and tractors that has grown, is my mechanics tools. I think I am going to have to buy another roll around cabinet

Aside from rust, the repairs / modifications of previous owners is probably the next most frustrating problem encountered. Especially if the previous owner had a torch or a welder.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

If you want a rel interesting project take on one like my 48 was when I bought it 17 years ago. It had been sadly neglected, and was not in running condition, but had a good recent paint job on it. Trying to get penetrating oil through a good layer of paint is interesting.

Take your time and be patient. I have been soaking a 57 yr. old Cub with PB and WD 40 for one week...applying at least one fresh coat/day to all stubborn looking fasteners...2 cans of PB, 6 cans of WD 40..
Take a small hammer and tap the bolts nuts and screws that look real bad as you are recoating them.
Yesterday, I was able to remove the seat post and seat, and the battery box (original). These are two of the toughest rust areas. They came off with a socket wrench without any problems. Also was able to remove and salvage the old high tower clamps
This might seem like a lenghtly procees but I think it will will save time and frustration in the future
Good luck.
Mike

I was looking for a tool cabnet for tools that are not often used. If you put the words tool and cabinet together, the price doubles
I happend to go through a Salvation Army, Thrift Store and found 3 heavy duty office cainets for $40. Not on rollers, but I can walk over to the wall to get what I need from them.

Wooden tool cabinets are great! I have all wooden ones for my cabinet and furniture making tools. So far I haven't got any really good mechanics tools that might possibly require wooden drawers, but I think I just may make myself some more. Will probably make em on rollers as well!
Sally Ann and other Neighbourhood thrift type stores are great places to get some real good bargains. Same with Crown Asset Sales (Government Surplus) and some antique aution houses. I am getting all my push type reel mowers from an auction house for rather cheap prices. Find the occassional nice tool there as well.
Anytime I can save a few bucks and still get reasonable quality, makes for a good day.
Sometimes ya gotta have a reminder or two

As Mike mentioned, paitence pays off. 3 years ago I bought a cub that had been in a fire and then left setting outside for several years. I set it in the backyard, and twice a week for a couple months I would go by it and squirt every bolt I could get to with Liquid wrench. When I finally started dismatling it I ended up breaking 2 rear lug bolts. Not bad considering I completely dismanteld the rust bucket.
