Super A question

A friend of mine has asked a question regarding the rear gears on a Super A, any advice will help.

He writes:

I changed the fluid in the rear gear, it was very white, so I drained it! On the side of the pumpkin there is a hole that does not have threads, but is low enough to leak the new oil out. the hole is the size of my finger, it had plenty of old oil, could this be just a breather hole?

Should not be any holes that are not plugged on the transmission.

I've been around these small Farmalls since I was a small kid. I've been communicating with people via computer about tractors for probably a dozen years. And I still can't figure out what he is talking about. Since you say any advice will help, I am going to be a smart $% and give what will probably be the least appreciated but most needed advise. He needs to get a copy of the Parts Catalog and spend at least an hour looking at the drawings and reading the descriptive names of all the big pieces of his tractor. Then maybe he can reword his question so we understand it.

I repeat, I know am being a smart $% with this reply, so nobody needs to post a reply telling me so.

As far as his original question, my best guess is that he has changed the transmission oil. It is now leaking out of either the drain hole in the final drive housing below his left brake or the drain hole in the axle housing on the right. He either has over-filled the transmission or has a bad seal on the differential shaft, probably both. Basic layout of this tractor is the same as the Cub, so you know what it takes to fix it.

I have seen the word "pumpkin" used on this forum once before, but still have not understood what it meant. I'll ask him to clarify.

Pumpkin is a typical term used when referring to an automotive / truck differential. the round center case between the axle tubes is referred to as the pumpkin.
Like Jim, I am uncertain as to exactly what he is asking. I would guess he is referring to the transmission case as the pumpkin. He has drained and re-filled a system and if he used the volume of old fluid (white - milky) removed as a reference for the amount to re-fill he has most likely way over-filled it. He needs to start by locating the level plug and draining out the excess. He can then determine if he has a leaking seal.

Hmm is this hole in line with the bolts that hold the axle or left final drove If so it could be a missing dowel pin.

My guess is that it is the hole in the left side of the clutch housing where you grease the throwout bearing. It normally has a cap in it. You can see it in this photo, just behind the implement mounting pad.

Thanks for the tips. I'll share them with my neighbor. BigDog, I knew if anyone knew what a "pumpkin" was it would be you or George. I didn't want to bug you guys, because of your recent health issues but was hoping one of you would read this. One of your neatest attributes is your ability to educate many of us, without having to remind us of your credentials.
