No it should not sound like that. Your spindle was loose.

I like your suggestion about the metal detector, Jim. Will dig it out and give it a try before sending a $50 order to Case.

Per Jim's suggestion I got out the ole Tesoro metal detector and wouldn't you know I found all but one spring and pin from the overrunning clutch spread out over 1000 square feet of orchard grass! Here's a pic of my findings (plus other stuff):



I'm wondering since I couldn't find the fouth set (spring & pin) if that wasn't left out from some previous repair. Would it function with only three sets?

Anyway, I recovered the three spring and pin sets, the cap (whew!) and even the sheared head off the 3/8's bolt! I kinda hate to see what the minimum order from Case IH is since I only need the one set. Now its time to try and extract the bolt from the spindle.

John, do you think that would also cause the overrunning clutch to skip around the spindle causing some pretty loud noise?

Agree with John's comments on running with 3 vs. 4. If you haven't cleaned up the sheave yet, inspection of the 4 holes should reveal whether all have been occupied recently or not. If not, you can quit looking.

I can see here you had 3 what can you see on the side I cannot see?
It makes lots of clicking when overunning.

Mike, Your picture looks like my IH Danco C2. I, also, had to replace the bolt you're referring to. I tried to use extractors, absolutely no help. I ended up getting my son-in-law to weld a nut on top off the remainder and got it out that way. One of the first things I had to work on was the mower deck when I got my Cub earlier this year. I only had to replace two of the springs, but I did have to have a new shaft. Thanks to the forum and Rudi's info I got through it ok. Quite an experience for a city slicker turned country bumpkin. Hi Bob,

I'm going to try an extractor today and see if I can budge it. If not then we do have a welder here so I'll try the nut trick.

Jim mentioned that I might of had a loose spindle that was causing all the racket before it went. Not sure how to tighten one so more than likly I'll end up with a new one like you. Where and how much do those go for?
