I'm into it now!

I posted the other day I was getting a rattling noise from what seemed to be the PTO area of my 53 Cub. I tried to look into the openings under the shifter plate and the diff. plate but I could not see anything. SO I bit the bullit and split the little critter and I did find that the bushing in the end of the input shaft where the pto shaft resides was really worn. Almost to paper thin. I inspected the strange bearing right in front of that and when I placed it on the shaft there was some wear but not much. I read somewhere that a little machine work on the shaft and you could use a bearing with an inside race. I think I will just replace it with a factory style bearing. Afterall this one lasted 51 years.
Those two issues and a couple various gaskets and I think I will be good to go.
Oh and I replaced all the sections on the sickle bar and adjusted all the wear points and I could actually mow the lawn with the thing.
I wanted to post some pics but I don't have any place online to upload them. I will have to set one of those accounts up.
Any one give me some advice on how to go about it I would appreciate it.

You must have read my post regarding changing the bearing. With very little change the bearing can be replaced with a standard bearing that will cost much less and be better. If I remember right, it is a ND 6004 or equivalent. This will make up for the wear of the shaft that causes the looseness and also be permanently lubricated.

The 6004 fits the housing, but requires just a little reduction of the shaft.

Don't forget to replace the bushing for the PTO shaft while you are at it.

since i don't see a shifter and it looks like there's a lever where the hydro shifter goes, i'd say it's a 125

I am kind of envious of all you lucky guys who have them. I was told by a few guys up here, that about 10-15 years ago, US dealers/parterouters came up to the Maritimes and bought up every Cub Cadet they could find. There were lots of them, cause they shipped them back stateside on tractor trailers Same thing with all the old IH pickmeups.

Now I know why there seems to be a dearth of them around

The Cub Cadet in the background is a 1967 model 123 hydro. I have had a couple John Deere lawn tractors and they were gear drive and a royal PITA to mow around a bunch of stuff in the yard with. They were all in the 80's and I can tell you that this Cub CAdet is 10 times the tractor they were.
I also have a 1950 Farmall C and it is outside while they Cub is in disrepair. I paid $400.00 for the C and I started it up and drove it up on the trailer. The C is unrestored and I hope to have all three of them like new some day. (wishful thinking)
If I do restore them I guess I will just have to but another one to use so I don't get them dirty.

Funny you should mention that, Rudi, 'cause about a year ago I sold some Cadet items to a fellow in St John--he rented a van andcame down and picked up items in three different locations here in Maine. I was his third stop and the stuff he'd already picked up didn't look as though it was worth the trouble, but if you want something bad enough, you take extreme measures (don't ask me how I know).
