Safety sign Johnnie found for the Tractor Shed

Postby Gary Boutwell » Sun Jan 11, 2009 9:26 am

My lovely bride of some 44 years loves to flea market.

On one of her foreys, she found this sign for the Tractor Shed:

The message says it all.

This is an old antique sign. I think Humble was a subsidiary of Standard of Ohio (now EXXON/Mobile.)

Take it to heart and heed the warning.

Keep on working on those Cubs.

Great find Gary! Tell Johnnie to keep on shopping! (I know - that's not necessary.)

Humble is an old Texas company but it was eventually owned by Standard Oil of New Jersey. I think the rebranding to Exxon happened in the early 70's, so the sign is at least that old. I remember seeing Humble branded gasoline in 1970 when I took a trip out to the Southwest.

Gary:

Tell Johnnie, nice find. I like to flea market and have for over 30 years now. I just don't get the kind of deals that I really would like. They seem few and far between, so when they do come, it makes em sweeter :D

Nice thing about flea markets.. one person's junk is another one's treasure :big smile:

Nice find Gary. This thread is interesting, because as a kid I heard about all of these company names while listening to my grandfather. He worked for Esso Standard Oil (and probably various other entities) from 1919 to 1955, and even into his 80's could recite a great deal of detail about the various purchases and mergers that created what is now Exxon. He worked for John D. Rockefeller Jr, as what would be called a corporate secretary today.

Here's a neat link from Wikipedia on Humble Oil:

I found this old Cub, Forgotten and Forlorn,
With pistons and valves frozen and worn.
Help from my buddies on Farmallcub.com,
And an engine from Ralph, (37’s the one),
Now ole Corky is running and back to life,
Much to the surprise of my dear, dear wife!

Sounds like good safety advice to me!

I was asking various people what they used in their parts washer and where to get the fluid and one guy who owns a truck repair business said he didn't know where to get the parts cleaning solution, they just used diesel and gasoline mixed.

Needless to say, his advice went straight to the dump. Accident waiting to happen.
