It's a 444 not a B414
I was looking at a tractor and bought that I was told was an English made B414 but it turns out it is really a IH 444. More HP I believe and a later model. Anyone know anything about this tractor? This one was a highway tractor with turf tires and very low miles....583 total. As I mentioned I want to pull a baler and it also has a 3 pt hitch (bonus round for me!!!!).
Thanks, Chris

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Re: It's a 444 not a B414
The problem with the engines in these,(444 and the 2444) is that you cant find a used block for them!!!---I have and am still looking for short block for my 2444!---Have seen lots of the engines, but all were like mine!! SCATTERED !----rods dont seem to stay attached to the crank very well!!!---I think a lot of this problem is abuse by former owners, BUT if you ever need to replace the block ---GOOD LUCK!!! The block has different bolt pattern( clutch housing end) than the regular block in these models and are not interchangeable ---Or thats what Bates Corp. IH Parts told me!!
As for a baler tractor, they are just the nuts for that, as they are easy to drive, well balanced, and have the power to bale with ! thanks; sonny

Re: It's a 444 not a B414
My cousin raised beef cattle on 115 acres for years using a 444. He plowed, planted, mowed, raked, and pulled a 45 IH baler with it. He went to a bigger tractor when round bales required more horsepower. The 444 is a fine tractor that will serve you well.
Best,
Mike

Re: It's a 444 not a B414
Thanks BD, Sonny and Mike,
Fortunately the block is in fine condition. No wear in the piston area and this is a sleeveless block so that I am told is good. I do have to put the engine back together and need a gasket kit. I was trying to figure out the name of the place to order and there it is....Bates. Thanks!! I'll keep you posted with the engine rebuild project. I do need a clutch, there was nothing attached to the flywheel when I got it and an alternator. Anyone have a wiring diagram? These are a little more involved than the basic wiring of the Cub. Also did this ever have a cab option?

How interesting....never noticed. He has too much stuff. He probably won't notice parts missing. ssssshh!
Anyone else? Mine is a gas version. I don't know if it is 6 or 12 volt. I only have the engine and misc. parts at my house. The tractor is in Rhode Island awaiting a ride home.

Re: It's a 444 not a B414
It will be factory 12 volt neg. ground system!-----probably be alt with internal reg.
It is newer than my 404 and 504 but I have some books for these,--now if the wiring is similar maybe we can work with that to at least get you started hooking up engine wires! thanks; sonny

I like the 444, kinda like the red headed step child IH. I have always thought they were a good sized machine.

One other interesting thing is it is IH highway orange. What is the feeling about leaving it that way?

Re: It's a 444 not a B414
I was thinking that the Diesel version had sleeves,--BUT the gas version was sleeveless !! the gas parts are the hard to find ones,---diesel parts more readily avail.
The block casting number of the gas block is 388575-R1. These motors were used on a few machine models, like 91 or 93 combine, a couple swather models, I have a list of all the exact models and will see if that book has been unpacked yet and can post the interchange list!
A cab was not an option that I am aware of! thanks; sonny
