up all night from,,i should know better
I painted cub -22 parts. I use a catalyst hardener in my paint, i used a respitory mask for such paint, however it was the 3rd use on this mask, and i think the cartridge was not as effective this time. My lungs have been burning all night long, and if i lay down it hurts worse. dumb dumb and dummy me. i did switch brands of hardener , so its possible that i may be reacting to a different chemical. hope i feel better soon, JiM G.

Doesn't sound good to me. I'm sure some others will chime in here with more experience on the dangers of this stuff. From what i'm hearing I don't think the cartridge type mask is the proper mask. I hope you'll be ok. Might be worth a few phone calls? Be Safe!

The use of a hardener should ONLY be accompanied by the use of a supplied air respirator and full body suit. Don't risk damaging your health any more. Your family needs you around and so do we.

Re: up all night from,,i should know better
thanks for your concern. I did contact 3m help line, they make masks for painting, i told the customer service person what i was using for paint and hardener, they are going to get back in touch with me today. I have painted 3 tractors and never had this problem before with my lungs. My shop has a roof vent that i use while im painting, the electric vent is designed for use while painting. other then that i just tarp off shop, not to get over spray everywhere. I will not use hardener again til i find out more about protection. thanks, JimG.

That hardener is great, but can cause serious health problems. Not sure if it is worth it. Ask George Willer about it sometime.

Re: up all night from,,i should know better
Jim,
Lesson learned--move on!
Go to a good auto body and paint supply store and buy an OSHA and NIOSH approved paint mask.
There are several good ones out there. 3M seems to be the post prevalent brand.
Health first!
I personally use a 3M brand. Paint under a shed with plenty of ventilation. Wear a full body suit.
I will take a chance on a bug getting in the paint, I can fix that. Can't fix ruined lungs.
Hope you feel better.

ONLY A SUPPLIED AIR MASK IS TO BE USED WITH HARDNER ALONG WITH A FULL BODY SUIT AND GLOVES
now that you have reacted to the hardner DO NOT PAINT WITH HARDNER AGAIN no if ands or buts

Re: up all night from,,i should know better
hello,
1) I LEARNED A LIFE LESSON ON PAINTING TODAY.
2) I SPOKE WITH MY LOCAL DR. TODAY... JIM GOT AN AS_ CHEWING FROM THE DR.
3) I ALSO TALKED TO A LOCAL AUTOBODY MAN , AND HE CONFIRMED EVERYTHING YOU GUYS KNOW ON THE HARMFUL EFFECTS FROM HARDENER.
4) I STAYED HOME FROM WORK, DR. SAID DRINK TONS OF WATER, SIT UPRIGHT, AND REPORT BACK TO HIM IF I DONT START TO GET BETTER.
5) 3M INFORMED ME THE MASK I WAS USING IS INTENDED AS A 1 TIME USE MASK, AND NOT FOR CATALYST TYPE HARDENER, AND THEN A BUNCH OF BIG LONG NAMED WORDS I NEVER HOPE TO LEARN.
3M SAYS THE ONLY SAFE METHOD IS A POSITIVE PRESSURE SUPPLIED UNIT. SOME OF YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS.
6) I WILL NOT USE A HARDENER AGAIN , IT SCARED ME THIS TIME.
tHE DR. ALSO SAID THE DAMAGE IS DONE, AND HOPEFULLY THAT I WAS NOT EXPOSED LONG ENOUGH TO CAUSE A LIFE LONG ISSUE.
THE PAINT AND HARDENER I USED WAS: YENKIN-MAJESTIC
PAINT #8-0968 ITS A FORD SAFETY BLUE COLOR
AND REDUCER AND HARDENER WAS FROM SAME COMPANY
Thanks for your concerns, and I know i learned a lesson, I hope other will read about paint products and take all the safety percautions serious. Im feeling much better. thanks again everyone.

Re: up all night from,,i should know better
Glad you are feeling some better, glad you talked to the Dr., and real glad you are kind enough to post this without fear of ridicule. This is scary stuff, and I know that you just put the respect in me, probably others as well. We used an automotive paint with hardner on Andrew's cub, and I made him wear a mask with carbon filters, but that probably wasn't correct. Luckily we were outdoors in the March winds....
Whew, might have dodged one there!
Get better, Jim!

Re: up all night from,,i should know better
the damage is done each time you inhale the fumes from the hardner
you may react the first time, the third time, the 20th time
you will show a reaction to it at some time
each time you will react worse to it
you will quit using it when you react or spend the rest of your life regreting using it
the rest of your life may be very, very short
even with an air supplied hood or mask you still will react to it from skin contact

Jim,
Glad you're feeling better. Wow, Thank you for posting this. I've never used the stuff, but was planning to so in the near future. Now, I don't think so.
I know it took a lot of courage to tell your story, but you may have spared a lot of folks a lot of misery today.
Thank you!
