trailer crane

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Sat Nov 06, 2004 8:28 pm

I used to just pick up heavy items such as wheel weights, plows, etc. and load or carry them wherever I wanted. Due to health I can no longer do that. I've been debating mounting one of the Harbro Freight pick up cranes on my trailer, but wasn't certain it would be practical. Bill Blansett had one at Cubarama, and after looking his over I decided to go ahead with a little modification. Instead of mounting it inside the trailer I had some plates welded to the outside and added some cross braces to stiffen the sides. It works pretty good. That is a neighbor's 6 foot 3 point hitch blade I am loading with it. Capacity is 1000 pounds with the arm retracted fully, or 500 with it extended to the maximum as it is in the picture.

Great trailer, Great hoist, Great house behind it and that looks like the flag for the 8th green just to the right of the driveway.

John:

Great idea. Amazing what a little ingenuity and some necessity can come up with. Now going to the shows with implements is going to be infinitely easier  :!: :D

Yes, I see it in the picture, just don't remember it in the yard. I'll look tomorrow to see what it is.

Great idea I saw several of those at the Portland In. Tri state tractor show . The 1 cylinder engine guys had them to load and unload their engines. Do you have any concerns about bending the trailer if you put to much weight on the crane. Did you make provision for a jack under the crane to transfer the weight to the ground like the some of the inclosed car trailers use. After all it is only human nature to so how much it will really pick up. You Know the Tim Allen syndrome! Great job. Steve

Thanks Steve. I didn't make any provision for suport from the ground. It is right in front of the axles and the frame at the point is about 6 inch angle. The main problem I had was it trying to twist the frame. I had some 3/16 inch thick 4 inch angle iron that I welded from the frame on one side to the other. That eliminated the twisting. It doesn't show in the picture but there is also a mounting bracket on the other side of the trailer so I can use the crane on either side.

It also has a long enough winch cable you can pull stuff up the ramps. You don't have to make noise starting them for loading. :D
