Re: Cheap fertilizer?
if manure is not composted it will take about 4 months for the nutrients to come out of the manure into the ground. so if you put it down after planting, reallity is fresh manure does help a little, but not enough to make a considerable difference.

I was thinking about this thread while reading an article in Country Folks Magazine. They sited this website: http://www.extension.org/pages/Manure_Value_and_Economics_Articles. There is a lot of information there.

Just a thought...When it comes time to side dress how about using a drop or broadcast spreader between rows?

Fertilizer is more effective in a band beside the plant. Plus you could have some leaf burning if you get fertilizer over the top of the plant. Broadcasting between the rows is going to fertilize the middles--you don't have anything growing there.

Re: Cheap fertilizer?
I'm learning alot here. My corn won't grow really tall like it should. I added horse manure and lime plus some chicken manure and some 4-4-4 last year. And I'm getting short corn height wise and small ears. The corn still tastes good. What should i do next? 12-12-12? or 29-4-4? or 10-10-10? How can i grow good quality corn?
If eggs come from chickens and baby chicks come from eggs how did the first chicken get here? Some of these birds go back to the dinosaurs. (turkeys)

I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Re: Cheap fertilizer?
Corn needs lots of nitrogen. Side dress with ammonium nitrate (N) when plants are 4" tall. Side dress again when cobs just start to form. As for the other fertilizer get a soil test first. Manure can take 4 months to release nutrients. Follow the test recommendations but still side dress with N.
