Spring Turkey Anybody?

Postby Bigschuss » Tue May 05, 2009 8:04 am

I passed on a nice tom at 15 yards on Tuesday as I just didn't have a nice clean shot. Got a second chance at a different bird this past Saturday, this time the shot was clean at 18 yards so I took it. My biggest ever bird by weight....20 pounds, 8 inch beard, 1 inch spurs.

Does anybody else take to the spring woods in search of the elusive gobblers?

Nice bird. I don't hunt em myself but most of the locals do. :) Grump

Yep. They've been real quiet around here so far this spring. Very nice bird.

I see them all the time while deer hunting. I get my permit every year, because its free, but I never get a chance to get out there in the spring. Too much gardening and mowing to do.

My son Jake got his liscense this year and got his first turkey , and it was a jake. I only went once and shot a monster with 11 3/4 inch beard and 1 1/2 inch spurs. I figured I got lucky once and wouldn't top it. So I haven't went since and that was 8 yrs ago

I usually wear them out myself but I had a guy slip in on me a couple years ago on the 3rd day of season using a high powered rifle. It kind of messed me up a little and I've only gone out a couple times since and that was late in the season.
All things change since there's a little boy waiting for me when I walk thru the door each night.
NEVER think your the only one in the woods even if it's posted land..
I laugh each time I see a hunting video and the hunter throws the turkey on his back as he walks out of the woods.
You'll only do that once here in West Virginia.

Very nice Turkey..

very sweet bird. nice going. I would like to try Turkey hunting with a bow. My buddies are into archery, and they have had good success. We have lots of wild turkeys around here, i see them most mornings , and evenings.
