Oil Slime, need help.

Postby lonnyb » Mon May 18, 2009 9:28 pm

Hi

I have a IH 460 that the hydrulic oil has developed a nasty slime to it.

This tractor has sat all last winter and was just fired up last wekend, the power steering would not work, a good sign the filter is plugged.
Apond removal of the filter, I found the filter to be covered with a slime and a gray goo.

What is the cause of this?

Is there a cure for this? other than the obvious, change out the 25 gallons of hytran and change the filter.
Is one cub ever enough ?

Sounds like water got in it to me.

Wow. 25 gallon. I cried when I had to replace 17 gallons in a skidsteer.

Being as cheap as I am. I would drain the 25 gallons out into open five gallon containers and let set for a while. See if the slime will seperate from the oil.

There is bacteria that will grow in oil, specially if it sets for a long time.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Its HY-TRANS!---Its supposed to pick up the moisture instead of letting it rust your internal gears/pump parts etc!------dump it put in in new with the new filter and next year park the tractor in a warmer place!----Some of these sheds are just humid enough to really sweat tractor cast in a bad way this time of the year.----thats why mine set outside from Feb. til late june, cuts down on the condensation.
As far as re-claiming the fluid,--- NO!!!---its done its job and is gone! thanks; sonny

May be it's Hy-Trans and may be not. You are not out anything by letting it set and see if the slime will seperate from the oil. Worst thing that can happen is that you will have 25 gallons in buckets ready to take to the recycling center.

i suspect it's algae growing in the system. we see it in diesel and home heating tanks. it will stop the filter right up with a goo. Power Service Products, inc. Weatherford, TX. http://www.powerserviceproducts.com/
sells a product called Bio Kleen. its a biocide.
it does not say if it's ok to use with hydraulic oil, so i'd check with the manufacturer. it lists diesel and fuel oil, kerosene and gasoline.
tractor supply carries it in their stores

If its in an IH 460, it better be B-6 compatable or your headed for BIG trouble down the road!
