8 volt replacement

Postby dw » Wed May 20, 2009 2:29 pm

I rebuilt a super c and left it original 6 volt. I did alittle to the motor and now it is tight. The 6volt system really drains after a few turnovers. Can my regulator be adj. to put out more, or should i try to find a 8volt battery?

Clean all you connections, including where the starter mounts to the tractor, that will help alot. How old is the battery, and when was the last time it was on a good conditioning charge?
The 8V battery is not required if everything is good with the original 6V system.

I agree with Raymond.

Check all of your connections make sure that all terminals, terminal connectors and grounds are clean and bright. Ensure good metal to metal contact. Check your battery, and recharge as needed. I have a feeling though that unless you have installed a new battery, it may be time to visit your favourite battery shop  :!:

There is no good reason to ever install an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system when in reality diagnosing the problem and correctly fixing it will provide optimal results.

Did you overhaul the starter? Might be time for new brushes.

Here is my experience with my W-6. I replaced the battery (6 volt) and it still was hard to start. Replaced push button starter switch and all of the battery cables. Over the course of 50 plus years, resistance can build up in the cables and starter. I tried the 8 volt route and while in theory it works, those batteries are more expensive and it was always a pain. Also, depending on the size of your battery box, you can buy a 6 volt group 2 battery and it will have more cranking power.
