East Texas Deer Forage

Postby TBAR » Sun Dec 05, 2004 1:23 pm

I planted one of my fields in deer forage this fall. Oats, wheat, greens etc.

I am disappointed in the seed coverage and the picture quality but the end resuts are great!!! We have LOTS of deer and hogs coming in. :D :flip: :D

Yeah it is rather sparce, but man that is all edge. Has it been dry? Looks like it to me, but what would a city slicker know. How log ago did you plant. Up here in my part of NY you have to get it in real early to make any progress with a cover crop.

Hey TBAR, do something for me. Take a milk crate or a roll of wire and place it somewhere on your plot. If you have growth inside the crate or wire roll and none outside, you may find that the deer are keeping your plot cropped.

Did you test your soil???

Did you mix you own seed or buy it pemixed???
I was in the biologic plant and I will tell you don't buy from them as some of the seed they use is 2 years old & older although some is fresh.

Last it looks like you drilled it in.
I have had better luck using a broadcast seeder the a light discing.

Not telling you what to do as I live in NY & don't about the soil & weather
where you are.
If it's been broken I did it.
If its not broken wait till I touch it.

I bought the mixed deer forage stuff but the bag was expensive and wouldn't cover the entire area. I purchased the oats and wheet from the feed store to use as a filler. They did much better than the expensive stuff.

I actually did broadcast it, then went back and lightly disked it in.

Tbar when did you plant? Was there any rain and was it timely? How long after planting is the picture? has there been any rain since? Doesn't matter what part of the world you are in those questions are good. Also wonder what was in the field before this crop? Did you soil test? did you lime and or fertilize?
Damed if i ain't the nosiest guy in the world. But I learn more this way.

Thanks

Planted Oct 30th and it rained the next day. In fact we have had ALOT of rain this fall.

Those pictures were taken on December 4th so the planting was 4-1/2 weeks old.

This field hadn't been worked in over 20 years until this past spring when I planted black eyed pees. The deer ate every plant and I didn't get a single pea!!!

With all that edge and wood in the back ground I can understand why. Peas are legumes and will add nitrogen to the soil which is good. Did you PH test? If so did it need much lime? I have no idea of the PH requirements for peas. Oh, how large is the field? How large are the deer now. One time I made a comment that some time I feed the deer and that some time the deer feed me. Some lady thought that I was baiting. I had to expain that If you have a corn field or pasture, you are feeding the deer even if that is not the purpose of growing corn. She was much relieved but still took the bambie " How can you eat those beautiful things"? I showed her the dent in my bumper and busted grill and asked which way she prefered them dead. By my 30 40 Kraig or by 79 chevrolet pick up. All I got was "Humph" and a walk away. Too dam many liberal tree huggers in NY.
There the same ones turned cyotes loose and wolves. Go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
