'79 Red Cub

1979 Red Cubs seems to be a little scarce. Do any of you know exactly how many of them were made? Do any of you know what the value of one might be, if you could find one?

The colors were still an option then . But" For some reason ,unknowen the last of the cub tractors were painted Red, Your Sr# should give you a idea when your cub was built. I suppose it would be somewhat of a collector for that reason. "Jack"

Garvin, according to the serial numbers there were only about 550 standard cubs made in 79. Most of them, I'm sure were yellow & white ones.

Jerold Stack's Cub is shown on the ATIS Cub FAQ to illustrate the '75-'79 models. The last I checked, it was still listed in RPM as the highest known existing serial number (within 20 of last built). Although it appears to have been repainted, it looks like the original color was yellow.

I have no facts on this matter, as the question above, i remembered reading about it and whent back to Ken Updik's book and found the statment I made on Page 124, THe final Cub Line. "Jack"

The "standard color" used by IH changed a few times. It also stands that for decades IH had both yellow and red available as regular production options, leaving it somewhat ambiguous as to what it means to refer to a standard color.

I have it on pretty good (but none the less anecdotal) evidence that some dealers in the southeast believed (rightly or not) that they could not sell a yellow tractor. So they ordered all their tractors in red. They also complained at length to the company about having to pay more for red tractors. Since a lot of Cubs went into that territory, that may have prompted the late change to red.

Ken evidently has good evidence that 253685 (the last Cub) was red. Likewise I have pretty good evidence that 253666 was yellow.

Without the build cards, there is no way to know how many of the last (or any other) Cubs were red vs. yellow.

I know for a fact that 253611, 74th from the end of the line is presently employed at Brunswick County (NC) schools to mow athletic fields. It is Red. And 253636 is yellow and white although it has been repainted.
