low compression

The engine had low compression on all cylinders can you guess why?

And I found the PO replaced the head gasket upside down.

Valves stuck open will give low compression every time.
What was in # 4 Was something in it or so much carbon there was detonation.

Looks like the tractor has been running with something was loose in the #4 piston for a while. That's got to be the most beat up piston head I have ever seen. Hopefull the cylinder walls didn't take the same beating.

Ah. What the heck. Just think of the fun you can have overhauling the engine.

Eugene. the cylinder wall appeaers to be fine but the piston will have to be replaced.What ever was in the cylinder was gone when I took off the head. Must have been done by the PO.It started and ran fine.but was really down on power it would barely carry the load of the mower when engaged.

If the pock marks on the top of the piston are all that is wrong with it, it isn't ruined. I've seen worse reused.
