I HAVE A MOLE PROBLEM (HELP)

Postby johnny j » Sat Oct 10, 2009 5:57 pm

Moles are driving me crazy. I bought a mole trap last May and caught one mole in five months. They are in the strawberry patch ,turnip patch and now I went back and saw one in my asparagus patch. They have been in everything I have tried to plant. I leave the trap 24 hours or 2 days in one spot and nothing. Does anyone have any idea of how I can rid myself of all these moles. I must have every mole in the state of Maryland in my garden! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Johnny J

First to determine: Is it a mole or gopher? Moles leave tunnels at the surface in their search for insects. A pain, but not too much crop damage. Gophers, however have deeper tunnels and leave good sized mounds of dirt they have excavated from their tunnels. Gophers do eat crop roots and can cause quite a bit of damage. Killing/trapping a mole is MUCH easier than trying to eradicate gophers!! My best luck with gophers is to open the tunnel to light and wait with a 22 pistol till they come to recover the hole. Plus you get the satisfaction of personally blasting them :{_}: Moles, however are much easier to kill with the standard spiked mole traps. Just find a tunnel, flatten it with your foot and watch it for a day or two, if it's been pushed back up, you have an active tunnel and can set the trap. I have had good luck with this method. I am also sure there will be other posts with additional suggestions.

Years ago when I had major mole problems I found the only way to rid yourself of them is to do away with their food supply.
Talk to someone at your local farm supply and get some type of spray that kills all grubs and such that they like to eat and they'll move on.
The stuff I used back then has since been outlawed, it worked great and almost landed me in the hospital just spraying it on the ground and catching a wiff...

Try this "How To" article for getting gophers.

There is an organic compound that kills grubs, which moles feed on. Check with your local nursery or garden supply store.

I heard the name of the compound on one of the radio gardening talk shows. Driving at the time. Didn't write down the name. CRS.
I have an excuse. CRS.

There are 2 products on this page that will deal with grubs. I have not used either, but I may get the nematodes for my veg garden next year to protect my root crops.

One day this summer I was working in the garden. While taking a break, sitting in the shade, listening to a baseball game, I noticed a mole 'working' in a tunnel. I could see him pushing up the dirt. I got a shovel, dug him out, and eradicated him. Using some patience, I got 3 that afternoon. Not a very efficient way to go about it, but it worked for the 3 I saw.

I attach a hose to the exhaust of my VW diesel pickup and put it in a mole tunnel. After about ten minutes of smelling diesel fumes they come out with their hands up and the dogs dispatch them.

Flyawa ,genius. Great idea. I had a problem, but I didn't have to do a thing. I had two Austrailian blue heelers (cowdogs) that dug them up and used them as a new chew toy.
