Super C front ends

Okay, I see pictures of Super C's with wide front end and then again with tricycle front end. Was it an option or was it just different years? I would like to have a Super C but I don't want a tricycle front.

And a very rare one in the Deep South. All that I have ever seen were NF (2 tires up front) or the tricycle (one front tire).

I had to go to Illinois to find a wide front for my Super C. Still don't have the bumpers.

But I do love that tractor!

I enjoy mine as well. Drives like a Cadillac. Steers with one finger and a nice cushy ride. A lot more stable than I thought it would be with the narrow front.

A narrow front may be easier to row crop with, and it will have a much smaller turning radius. I've been told that there are fewer accidents with the narrow fronts since the drivers are more cautious. I've never seen any statistics to back this up.

Big Bog was wright the wide fronts was a option. And yes they are very hard to find in good shape most of them you find have been welded on.

'round these parts [mostly corn belt] wide fronts and/or standard tread [fixed widefront axle, sometimes called 'wheatland' - such as the IH 'W' series] were pretty uncommon in the '40s & '50s.
By sometime in the '60s adjustable wide fronts were gaining much more favor until now the nf's are not at all common - or even available in many cases.
As to safety, the nf, when it hit a rock or dropped in a plow furrow could spin the front, and thus the steeriing wheel = broken or very sore thumbs, elbows, etc.
Our neighbor was proud of his new 'C' - until he dropped the front end in a hidden hole, broke the whole assembly off, replaced with a nf which is still on the tractor 60 years later. I don't remember if he was injured, but it sure cured him of nf tractors.

And you've never had that happen with a wide front? The Ford/Ferguson tractors had a special feature for that. The front hubs stuck well past the edge of the tires. Just when you think you cleared an end post, that hub would hit and the wheels spin all the way to the lock. All you could do was try to get stopped before you were wrapped around the post.
