snake traps

A while back there was a thread on here about keeping snakes out of the chicken pen. Someone posted a link to a poultry site which had a discussion and instructions on how to build a snake trap out of wire, like poultry fence wire. Does anyone remember where or how I could find it. Seth wants to build one.

we looked at those but didn't see any worth mentioning but the wire traps this guy made were great. He had a picture with it full of snakes.

This is not snake trap info !
However, an exterminator told me many years ago to keep snakes from an area to lay down a barrier of ag lime around the perimeter and snakes will not cross because it will burn their skin.( DISCLAIMER,) I do not know if the lime will harm the chickens, if they are caged they would not have direct contact with the ring of lime.

If you like the barn snakes around for rodent control, but don't like the egg eating ones-----try this.

Puncture an egg and blow out the innards. (stick in a broomstraw and whisk, then a straw and blow out the liquid). Fill the inside with plain old salt, tape the hole and replace the loaded egg back in the nest(s). Any snake that eats a salt filled egg will be eating its last meal.

Most snakes are opportunists. Meaning, that the same snake that eats the mice in your barn will also eat an egg, if presented with the opportunity. If you want to keep snakes out of a building, seal up the holes.

Years ago we had some nest boxes mounted on an inside wall of the barn. We would put setting (glass) eggs in the nests to encourage the hens to come back to the boxes each time rather than laying eggs along fences, etc. One night a snake crawled up into the box and swallowed a glass egg, then through a knot hole inot the next nest and swallowed another one. He was still there trapped when we came out the next morning to gather eggs. Had to cut the snake in half to get it out and recover the glass eggs.

John I know this is somewhat "off topic" but reading your post reminded me......When my kids were young I bought them this book. Its a really cool book about a snake that swallows "fake" eggs. I still take it to school to read to my class when we study reptiles. They love it.

grump you have to love bugspray .com i've been using them for a couple of years now and they have not disappointed. that snake trap that they offer could be built simple enough, same as a yellow jacket or japanese beetle trap.
