can you get a three jaw puller on it? that would be my first choice.

next, id heat it with a torch if you can get something under it to wedge it off, like a small chisel driven in.

someone could jump in here and tell me i'm wrong, but i think its a tapered cone, so one pop and its off. good luck

You have to get the pittman arm off and keyway out first. Then the lower housing will slide off (pried off ?) At the top of the shaft there is a bearing with a bearing retainer and three bolts that have to come out before you can pull the shaft out. The bearing is held to the shaft with a bot and washer into the shaft. I rebuilt two of them last year and its a bear to get the shaft and bearing out if it is rusted in. On one I have to do yet they did not put the bolt in the shaft on top of the bearing. And that lets the shaft slide up and down making the steering feel loose even though bearing and gears are in good shape.

Thanks guys, I used a ball joint (pickle) fork under the pittman arm than I heated up the pittman arm and hammered the pickle fork and the arm popped off.

Art; the shaft is tapered so once it started to move it popped off.

Spacegost

Glad you got it off :{_}: Sorry I read it to fast and just looked at the pictures and wrote the wrong response. Probably because mine was full of grease and I had a really hard time figuring out how to get the shaft out. I had to get a pittman arm puller for a car and grind it down to fit around the housing. I broke the first cheep one I bought and had to buy a second good quality one.

You know mine was full of grease too and I thought it just had gear oil in there. I do see a grease fitting and a fill, empty and over fill plug. So what do you do when it goes back to gather, pack the gear with grease or fill up with gear oil? :big give up:

Defiantly go back to gear oil. The reason it was filled with grease was that the seal was leaking and rather than going through all the work to fix the seal the PO filled it with grease. The problem with grease is that when you get condensation in it you cannot get it back out without pulling it apart and washing it out. With oil when you change oil the water comes out with the oil. Also as you drive around the oil splashes around and keeps the upper bearing lubed.

Billy's right. When I disassembled the steering box on my 240, it too had been filled with grease by the P.O., and all of it was thrown out to the outside of the box. There was an empty cavity around the gear and shaft. Things don't turn that fast in there, but grease doesn't stay next to the moving parts very long.
