Gospel singings

For almost 20 years now I have been involved in a Southern Gospel quartet group, many of those years traveling all over the country on a tour bus. Those are some of the best memories of my life and will always be treasured. Next to tractors gospel singing is my love. I generally do not tell this to people due to the fact some just do not appreciate it or want to hear it. My time being on this board I find that everyone on here wouldn't be offended by me sharing this information, if I am wrong please forgive me.

The group is The Southern Plainsmen Quartet. If any of you are in need of a group for a 5th Sunday singing or just any other church singing please give us a look at.

Just watched a program with the Statler Brothers (sp?) singing. There is something about the wailing tenor and lead coupled with low-down growly bass that makes a guy sit up and take notice. I sing Barbershop, and on occasion have sung my share of gospel as well. I love me a good old tune!!

Terry, every year Silver Dollar City, just west of Branson, MO, has a Southern Gospel Festival. It a great time with great music. We attend every year. Maybe we will see you and your group there someday.

OK... Terry, you have inspired me. As a long time Barbershop singer...I have always loved tight harmonies and do like the gospel sound. Well, now I have gotten bitten by the bug... I have been out researching the sound and style and LOVE it... How could you not?

Mike - we have been southern gospel music fans for years. The group in the clip above retired from the circuit several years ago. George Younce (the bass singer) had a tremendous range and versatile voice. Sadly, George passed on a few years ago as did Glen Payne (sp) but the tenor singer Ernie Haas has started a new group called Signature Sound. Check them out.
You will find a lot of southern gospel associated with Bill Gaither and there are several versions of the Gaither concerts on various cable / satellite channels.

Roger Bennett has too since passed on. After The Kingsmen began to fade, when Foxy and Big Jim retired, The Cathedrals became the flag ship gospel group in the gospel music industry.

I remember being at the Quartet Convention in 1999 while Glen was in the hospital. The Cathedrals were on stage when George stopped to talk and surprised us all with a phone call from Glen from his hospital bed. While Glen was talking George asked him to sing a song and Glen sung "Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone". That was the last time most people heard Glen's voice and was his final performance to a public audience. There was not a dry eye in that place. I remember every bit of it like it happened ah hour ago.

My favorite version of the Catherdrals group and song. You can't beat Kirk Talley in this.





I also liked this version of the group with Danny Funderburk as tenor.

This era is when they were on top of the industry.
