What Have You Done Now - she said - Missouri

Postby GWrider1957 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 11:37 pm

Well I did it, just brought home a 1949 cub and the little women thinks I'm nut's. Always wanted one and found it for a song, fold a 500 dollar bill in half and go from there. All I can say is it seems to run fine. Had to roll it off a hill to get her going. Generator not working, hit the starter and nothing happens, but fired up off the hill. Loaded it on the trailor and headed home. Got home and noticed two large pools of a milky white fluid under each rear wheel. Looks like some sort of seal replacements are needed. Don't know a thing about these, but I have a book, a hammer, and duct tape - the rest, I'll be asking questions from you all. Middle Missouri native and looking forward to hearing from others.
If there is a wrong way to do it, I'll find it.

Sounds like you got a good deal. The milky fluid is from the transmission. They are bad about collecting water and forcing the gear oil past the seals. Best to drain the transmission, add about 2 qts kerosene or diesel fuel and drive it around for 5-10 min., drain the diesel/kerosene and add 3 1/2 PINTS of 80-90W gear oil, then watch for leaks.
If no leaks you're good to go, if leaks, THEN worry about seals. As for gear oil, it has been said the GL 4 is preferred over the GL 5 as the GL 5 doesn't get along with yellow metal and the Cub transmission has some bronze bushings in it.

Welcome. As Bill mentioned about the oil, here's a picture from TM's site showing the 3 areas. You'll drain from number 1, fill up till oil runs out of number 2, and if the trans gets water in it from running down the shifter lever, it fills up and out number 3 where the side seals are at for the finals.

Welcome to the forum, and the statement (What have you done now) sure does sound familiar. Wonder if our wives are related. I am about a hundred miles east of you, and we also have some other members in the same general distance, VinceD, Eugene, come to mind, there are others that do not come to mind at present. One of our young members (Scotty) is presently stationed at Fort Leonard Wood for some heavy equipment training, and would probably be glad for a chance to spend some time looking at something besides uniforms and bulldozers. If you go to the announcements section and look at the Cubfest schedule (first item at tip of page) you will see one for Kansas, which is probably the closest to you if you want to attend one for a good learning session though you may be overwhelmed by the amount of friendliness and helpfulness you will find there. There also is a show (Cubarama) at Fredericktown the last full weekend of September every year. It is mainly a show (rather than a cubfest), for cubs, but any IH product is welcome.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
