1282

Postby farmallcub49 » Sun Mar 06, 2005 11:27 pm

I wandering over here from the cadet's big sister the CUB forum. I am curious about the 1282. This is a red one. What is the deal with them? A friend of mine has one, but in Ken Updike's book, there is hardly a blurb on them. It isn't even listed in one of those small yellow insets were the lest specs plus a list price. Is there any clue as to production numbers?? Or did they serial number them as they came of the line no matter what model it was??

Thanks

This one is definitly red Jim and it has an IH tag on it. I thought MTD started after IH closed the doors? Maybe a short cadet history lesson? Just checke the Ken's book again, appears you are correct in that MTD took over in '81. Can hardly remember that year, I was only two.

IH ended production of Cub Cadets in April 1981 and sold the Cub Cadet line in June 1981 to a newly formed company called Cub Cadet Corp, (CCC), which was owned by Modern Tool and Die (MTD). CCC continued to build the red 82 series tractors, to be sold by IH dealers, until 1985. The IH 1250 had been a popular 12 hp hydro tractor before the 82 series came out, but there was not a 12 hp hydro in the 82 series line as built by IH. After CCC started building the tractors, they added the 1282 for IH dealers, and built it from 1982 to 1985. They also built some yellow and white versions of the 82 series that were sold by Cub Cadet dealers. The 1282 is not in Kens book because it was never built by IH.

The hood side decal should say International Cub Cadet, but the data plate on the left frame rail by the brake pedal should say Cub Cadet (or Cub Cadet Corp), Cleveland, OH. That data plate also has the serial number on it. The 6 numbers after the "U" (looks like a "V" to some people) are the serial number, the numbers before the "U" are the "Kind Code" that tell what model etc, and the "U" means it was built in the USA. An exmple for a 1282 built in1982 is: 2050585U700000. 205 = Cub Cadet, 0585 = model, U = made USA, 700000 (thru 712899 for 1982) = S/N.
