generator/regulator problems

Postby cjpenny89 » Mon May 03, 2010 7:31 pm

I have talked with you guys many times in the past and I just can not seem to remember everything or things just stop working.
well I have a Farmall A with a Chrysler 6 volt generator/ hydraulic pump combo it was used to lif convertable tops. I actualy got it off a doodle bug and it works the hydrualics good.
Anyhow I took and put a 12 volt battery in the tractor and a 12 volt regulator. The tractor has a mag so I didn't need to worry about that.
when I hooked it all up I had the same problem as when I was trying to go 6 volt. I had to pull the reg cover and adjust the feild coil before it would charge. when it did charge I took a reading and the battery and it was 13.2-13.6 volts depending on engine speed. I figured that the old genny would work just fine to charge the battery????????
when I un-hooked the battery to put the battry box back in and went to hook it up it would not charge. This is getting me upset every time I get it charging either 6 volt or 12 volt it will work for a while then stop. my question is since i had to un-hook the battery do I need to re-adjust the feild coil now that it is hooked back up?
I have tried several new regulators and none of them work right out of the box. what do you think could be the problem?
I have it hooked up like this arm to gen, feild to feild. battery to positive on amp meter then other side to battery. I skipped the light switch since i do not have light on my tractor anyway. Is the any suggestions?
thanks
Chad

Don't forget generators may need to be polorized after being disconnected from a battery.

This is true, and also make sure that the ground connections for the regulators are very clean. I had a problem with mine where it had very dirty ground connections. Once this was cleaned up then things started to work fine. Setting the polarity is not difficult. On my super a you use a jumper wire and connect the bat and gen terminals on the voltage regulator. All you should have to do is a quick touch and it should be reset.

I got it! when I re-connected the battery I had to polarise it and I had to jumper the feild to ground then un hook it and everything is working.
