154 PTO
I am new to the cubs and now own a lowboy 154 with original loader and a 60" mower. We have not attached the mower to the PTO yet and I understand that the PTOs in these machines are touchy. 2 questions:
1. The pulley that came with the machine is a double and has a wide and a narrow pulley. Is this normal or some kind of modification?
2. The PTO spins freely when the tractor is running even though the PTO is not engaged. Is this a sign of a bad problem?
Thanks!

Re: 154 PTO
Not sure about your first question; but the pulley does spin freely when the engine is running as it is belt driven up front. You can see the belt if you pull one of the side panels off just behind the engine. The PTO goes into gear when you pull the engagement lever up. It's on the left side below the seat. At least it is on mine. Make sure your clear of the pulley unless you have a guard on it or your sitting in the tractor seat. Hope this helps. Jim

Re: 154 PTO
that does help--thanks.
The pulley I'm trying to figure out goes on the PTO shaft on the exterior to run the belts for attachments. Instead of a single pulley (that is usually found on rear of IH) it is a unit with with 2 pulleys--1 wide and 1 narrow. I'm guessing that 1 is to drive attachments in the rear and 1 is to drive the belly attachments. Does anyone know?

Re: 154 PTO
Sounds to me like someone found a pulley to fit the bushing and used it. Usually the pulleys are for the "B" size belt(5/8" wide). You may find a use for that extra groove sometime down the road. The snowblower used a double groove pulley(same sized grooves), but that setup was for the smaller width belts(7/16") and the pulley was only about 3" in diameter. Yours is probably around 7" for the mower.
Is your pulley the 2 piece kind (pulley and bushing) that clamps onto the shaft, or a one piece type?
Rick

Re: 154 PTO
That is helpful. It is the 7" variety and is all one piece. I will measure the grooves and think the "extra" is for a smaller width belt. Since we are trying to do things "right" should I locate a more traditional pulley---assuming they are available for sale somewhere?

I have a new, slightly used pulley available.

Re: 154 PTO
The key phrase here is "Loader with Mower" -
The "Double" pulley is relatively rare since most loader equipped 154's don't usually also sport a mower at the same time - although it is possibly to mount and use both at the same time.
One belt drives a rear mounted accessory hydraulic pump to operate the loader - the second belt goes down to the mower mule drive pulleys - thus both can operate at the same time (watch that front bucket when trimming close to the buildings or cars !!!!! Ha, Ha).
See attached two pictures - NJDale

NJ Dale: That's it! Thank you. I'll have to look for the accessory pump--don't think its still there. Machine also has the 3-pt hitch which makes it more confusing to look at but maybe its down there. I'll try to take a picture and post.

Re: 154 PTO
Do you guys have any pics of the loader itself. Is it an IH brand loader or other? I'm wondering why they didn't tap into the cub's hydraulics to run the loader and use the stock IH diverter valve. Seems when you need the loader and turn on the pto, the mower blades would also spin at the same time you're picking something up Interesting and waiting for more pictures.
Thanks for the pics, Dale

Re: 154 PTO
Hello Rick. I do not have the extra hydraulic pump so I am not able to provide pictures of that. Somehow this double pulley ended up on a machine without the need....but I will wait until we hook up the mower and use it before I say that too loudly (maybe it should be there and is missing!). I will get pictures of the loader (IH) and trace those lines back. I think they are fully independent of the lift for the 3 pt hitch and belly--which do appear to be connected to each other.

Re: 154 PTO
Hooking the loader to the existing tractor hydraulic pump would prove to be Very unsatisfactory - the gallons per minute are just way too small. You would always be waiting for the loader to raise or the bucket to uncurl. You absolutely need an additional pump to run the loader.
I, too, do not like the idea of the mower blades running while the loader is being used - but that is the way that it looks like IH had it set up from the factory. I guess that you could remove the mower belt when the mower was not in use - real PIA.
Two pictures are attached. In the one with the pump, the rear mounted PTO pump is upside down and just happens to be sitting on the front pads of the loader underbelly supports that go under the main loader uprights. In the second picture, you can see a 1050A Loader mounted on a 154 with a 3260 Mower and a 3 Point Hitch. This Loader is run by a non-factory hydraulic pump that is run from the front of the engine pulleys. This gives "Live" loader hydraulics. See the 4" x 8" block of steel mounted to the loader frame directly under the tractor exhaust.
Hope that the pictures help, NJDale

I have to disagree with you . It's not as bad as you'd think it would be. Even though the cub pump seems small on paper, it's amazingly fast. Look at any of the loaders made for the regular cubs and you'll find that the IH-1000, Wagner, Henderson,TwinDraulics, and others, all used the existing pump and diverted the flow through the "bypass" block. The power angle snow plow kits that have been made also use the existing pump and do a fine job.

Re: 154 PTO
I confirmed that I have the pump in front for the loader. I can't seem to get the attachments right but I do have pictures. This means that I can use a standard pulley and not the double. Nomad

Re: 154 PTO
Just be sure to familiarize yourself with the flow of the hydraulic system when you add items. If you plumb things wrong and "Dead End" the flow, gears will break either on the pump or cam. When you think you have it plumbed up, double check again to be sure. It's a headache if it's wrong If you add a control valve to the system, make sure it has an adjustable relief feature.

Hi Nomad, sounds like you have a nice outfit. If you are not going to use the double pulley I would be interested in buying it. I have a 1050a loader with the rear pump and no pulley. BTW, do you have a pic of your front mounted pump? I considered mounting mine up front but don't have the extra time with summer school.
