w6 steering issues

looks to me as if this steering control arm has been bent. it hit's the drag link and only allows about 1/2 of the turning angle. and i note wear marks as if it's been doing that for years. but at 1.25 diameter solid steel, it's a stretch to think of the impact needed to bend it. anyone have a picture of a w6 steering set up properly? and it looks like the tie rod end is bent up, too.

thanks art

You hit hard enough and often enough you can bend anything Iffn it don't break. You can see missalignment in two spots so your steering has to have been bent. I did a cold iron blacksmith to bend the arm from the touch control to the Rockshaft so it doesn't hit the fenders on my low boy. I did not have a rockshaft when i bought the low boy. I didn't know which rod i needed so i got the straight one figuring it would be easier to bend than straighten. With a big vise on a heavy bench wedged against a concrete wall and a 2" pipe over the end of the rod it bent like hot knife through butter.

By the way how you guys doing with the Fairbanks Morse move.

with comments from a couple of other forums, a look at Guy Fay's letter series book, and a couple of pic's from a guy in Saskachaun, Canada (sp), the drag link looks to be bent probably 3 inches in the verticle plane, and where the tie rod attaches is bent up about 3/4 inch.
combining those two corrections should put everything back where they belong.

this tractor has proven to be more challanging than a cub for the simple fact that when I had questions on the cub, the answers come from this board, real time. The W6 project, cause there's not so many around, has had more head scratching. still, i'm enjoying the refurbishment immensely.

thanks, art

put the W6 up on the trailer for her trip to the beauty salon  she'll get painted on monday. the brakes were an issue during the rebuild as everything inside the brake covers was either broken, bent or rewelded incorrectly. so today when i was asked (while we were prepping to run it down off the trailer into the body shop......) does it have brakes.....My only answer was that i believed i had repaired it correctly, but the proof's in the pudding, as they say. left it in gear with the clutch depressed for insurance.........but the brakes worked just fine...i'm excited to get this one running :!: :!:

but she sure is PURTY :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
