I believe it was 1977 when I bought a new IH 184 LoBoy to mow around my parent’s farm, plow snow, and haul wood. My father loved the little red tractor so much my mother asks me every time I mowed if I would sell it to her so she could give it to him for his birthday. Finally in 1979 I sold it to her when I moved away. I wanted to just give it to them but I was young and needed some money to get a start on my own. Anyway, last week my Dad stopped over while I was searching on Craig’s List for a garden tractor loader and he asks me to check and see what people were asking for LoBoys. I was surprised he was thinking of selling the little tractor as he always kept it waxed and stored inside but after he explained how he stopped using it after some clutch issues and starting problems a couple years back and how his health kept him from doing much I understood his reasoning. Then while searching for his prices I ran across a loader for the 184. I showed the loader to him and before he left he offered me a deal on the tractor if I wanted it to mount a loader to it. Well today I went to see the loader. The guy that had it was going to adapt it to another tractor and had cut the mounting plates off with a sawz-all. Before he did anymore to it he decided to just sell it. The cuts were clean and the pieces mated together well. Everything was there with the exception of the two support braces that run back to the axle. He said the guy he bought it from didn’t have them. The bucket didn’t show any wear, all the pins were tight, and it even had the original paint and decals. I guess you know it followed me home. In fact I was quite excited on the way back thinking about getting the little red tractor back and having a loader to mount on it. Only problem is I can’t find a good picture of the rear supports detailing where they mount on the axle. I figure they will be easy to fabricate if I know where they go. The parts list I found online shows pictures of the parts but it doesn’t show the actual mounting location for the axle. The pictures don’t show the mounting location for PTO driven pump either. I know it will be easier to tell when I get the tractor home but if anyone should have a picture they would like to share I would be thankful.
Bill - welcome to the forum and congratulations on getting your 184 back. I can't help with the brackets but there is a Yahoo Group for numbered lo-boys and I know some of the guys there have 1050 loaders. There may even be some pictures in the photo folders.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

they show a lot more detail then the illistrations I found. Espically the one of the rear braces and the mounting of the pump. Were those before and after pictures? If so you did a nice job restoring the loader.
I'm going to check the tractor out tomorrow and try to get it started. If the clutch issue isn't serious I might drive it home. It's about 14 miles from Dads place to mine so it should be an interesting trip.

You are welcome. No, none of those pictures are of any thing that I (my son) owns. My son has a 184 out in Colorado that he and I have done quite a bit of work on. As a result of this, whenever I am looking around on the web I "right Click" any interesting pictures (mostly from ebay) and save them to a library of Numbered Loboy Pictures. I now have several thousand pictures of parts and accessories for these tractors accumulated and am happy to help people out with them.

I went over to Dads to check the tractor out. Had to hold my hand over the carb to get enough fuel up to get it started. Even after starting it would only run with the choke pulled. The motor sounded good though and seemed to run storng even with the carb issues. I remember the tractor always having some blowby but thee was blue smoke comming through the crankcase breather. I'm hoping it's from being parked and the old oil because it looks like he hasn't changed it in a long time and it smells of gas. It was still close to the full mark so maybe some fresh oil and some run time will help. I didn't drive it home because something in the clutch assembly is clattering like metal on metal whenever the clutch pedal is pressed down. It's quiet with the pedal released. He said he parked it because of the noise after installing a new pressure plate, throwout bearing and clutch plate. He said it was making noise with the old clutch assembly too which didn't sound right. I pulled the top cover off and found the u joint is shot and there is a lot of play at the pilot bushing. I'll tear it down this weekend after we trailer it home. I got my fingers crossed but it looks like it might turn out a bigger project than I expected. Oh Boy Lo Boy!
The U-Joint from NAPA that NJDale recommended fits like a glove. Took about 2 hours for me to change + another hour to reinstall the driveshaft.

Thanks for the info on the part numbers at NAPA. School has kept me so busy I haven't had a chance to get the tractor home. However, dad towed it up to his garage and pulled the clutch assembly. Before he parked it the T/O bearing fell apart and he bought a new one along with a pressure plate and clutch disc form a dealer that was going out of business. Anyway, they sold him the wrong pressure plate for the 184 and he installed it because the dealership insisted it was the correct replacement. The clutch was correct but the rivets for the lining facing the flywheel sheered. The flywheel wasn’t affected, the T/O bearing is still good but the drive shaft came in contact with the fingers from the pressure plate. The teeth on the shaft are gouged but the teeth in the area that drives the clutch look like they are in good shape. I am going to try and post a picture in case anyone knows for sure the shaft is good enough to put back in.

Don't have a lot on the Numbered Lo-Boys but it is coming along. I do have a somewhat ok Owner's Manual (Jen Sales) for the 184. Other stuff will come along as I find it or folks volunteer the data. There is also a so-so Service Manual on the server as well - it is the IH-50 2004 Edition Complete Shop Manual which has a section on the Numbered Cubs such as the 184.
Thanks for the links. Yes, that was the cataloge with the pictures I saw. A copy came in handy when buying the loader to see what was missing. The parts diagram for the loader had some good illstrations of the missing rear support bars on page 3, part #3. Thanks to the pictures NJDale sent, I have an idea how to construct and mount them at the rear.
Dad still has a copy of the original manuals that came with the tractor. Would that be something you could post?
I know I'm digging up a year old post but I was hoping you still had those 7 pics detailing the install of the rear braces. I picked up a 184 this summer and a 1050a that had been on a 154. I have the rear braces with mine, but when trying to install them I keep running into the mid lift arms so I can't get the holes to line up with the main front supports.
