Re: Re PlantKevin, I wouldn't be stocking up on butter and salt. 3 year old corn seed will germinate poorly. Ed

Re: Re PlantI purchased new seed a few years back and dropped big $$ for name brand seed and none of it came up too. But the other seed i purchased came up on both sides of the failed to germinate corn seed. I think the companies are switching packaging and dates on us. Its time to kick some butt with feed back on the net. I like to stake the packages at each food plot but my wife threw the empty packages away so i can blame anyone right now. My seed this year came from the dollar store. Its all up and growing. I just don't know what seed company to trust now??
I got my shovel on some very old manure and we dumped plenty of it were my corn is planted so i should have decent corn if the rain lets up. I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
Re: Re Plantkevin do I remember it right but weren't you flooded out last spring sometime???????

Re: Re PlantKetcham, Three year old seed if kept dry should be ok. Did you have a hard rain just as the corn was emerging? I have had trouble with the sprout not being able to come thru the crust and turning back down. Was the soil warm? This is important if using SH2 or triple sweet corn. I did some replant on one planting but the other three came ok. Go figgure. Vern
Re: Re PlantGave up on corn this year.My second[not last] sucks also.Bad year I guess!!!! errrrrr!!! Not been to the farmers market yet either.I guess the GOV makes you weight your stuff now. Can't they keep their noses out of anything????? Next you will need to be licenesed to sell also!!!

Re: Re Plantaround here you have to be certified by the county health dept. to sell at farmers markets.---started a couple years ago thanks; sonny
Re: Re PlantHey Sonny, certified for what? For what it's worth my corn is just fair this year. I replanted twice. The poor germination, smaller ears, and generally lazy plants can all be attributed to the weather. I do take 12-15 dozen to the market twice a week. Your pictures look like a good garden this year.

Re: Re PlantYou have to BUY a piece of paper from the health dep. that says its ok to sell your stuff at markets, and more super strict regulations on the books in the near future!--Just a way to cut down on the number of people flooding the markets here!(and there are a bunch at every market!)--when you get that many people on the grounds,--nobody sells enough to pay the $10.to $60. entry fee to set and try to sell!
Mostly its more GOV. control and serves no real purpose other than cost the grower more money to sell!---thats 1 reason I do not sell at the markets---Heck I cant even get people to come get the stuff for free!! We didnt get a lot of different veggies planted this year due to all the EPA BS earlier this spring, but did get some lat stuff in and are now fighting weeds/bugs trying to save some of what we do have! Our corn is about 3/4 stand, but sure looks good at the present time!--did re-plant cucs. for the second time as not 1 seed sprouted the first time!--thought they might make a late crop! thanks; sonny
Re: Re PlantThis just blows me away. All across our country there is a big push to grow green, support local farmers, and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. The markets I'm aware of advertise for customers and many vendors including me sell out in a couple hours. Millions, I suppose, people out of work have turned to gardening as a means of feeding their family and to make money in these tough times. Farmer's Markets all across the country are thriving and growing leaps and bounds. That said how about this health department thing. I smell a big rat! The whole idea of limiting buyers and vendors just doesn't hold water. If the paper is about a health safety thing then maybe. Restaurants, hospitals, and other facilities don't pay a fee for a health and safety inspection. So maybe it's time to dispose of spoiled fruits and vegetables in a way other than the trash can. BTW our market fee is $10 annually and $3 per sell day with Tuesdays free.
