Kohler K301 front oil seal leaking......

Postby Ken (48 Cub) » Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:37 pm

Oil seal part number is 47 032 06-S ......... I think?

Can I set this oil seal a little deeper to allow another seal to be added in fornt of it or will I need to pull this one first?

What's the best way to pull it? Slide hammer? Where can I get one?

This is the reason the PTO quit working :( You can see the oil leaking very slowly at the bottom.

I would pull that seal and install a new one. You can put a sheet metal thru the seal and use a slide hammer (Harbor Freight) or punch an awl or screw driver thru the seal housing and pry it out. The Kohler manual says to seat the seal an 1/8" in from the block face, but I would seat it where the "seal" part is contacting a "new" area on the crank. Grease the new seal part before you install it, and clean the crank good in the seal area, of any rust or varnish/cooked on oil.

Parts stores carry the seal in their parts book.

NAPA and Primeline numbers are: Front seal 7-04002 Rear seal number 7-04003

I would try to hook the inside of the seal and pull it out.

PTO not working - perhaps and perhaps not.

Parts stores carry the seal in their parts book.

That is going to depend on the parts store. Some NAPA stores have some common parts such as seals or some of the bearings used on a Cub Cadet or Kohler engine, but don't walk into an AutoZone and expect to buy parts for your Cub Cadet. A smaller town with a non-chain parts store would probably have more of those type parts than would the chain stores in a larger city, including some of the NAPA stores. Some of the NAPA stores, specially the company owned stores, may not stock those items and will not order them for you unless you are one of their "business" customers.

Well it appears that I need seal number 7-04003 - this seal has the larger OD. Where the PTO attaches is what I'm calling the front of the engine...........

I can't get it until tomorrow. Is it me or does it seem that Napa is not stocking items like they used too?

Warehouse stocked. Normally in store items ordered by say 2 PM will be in the next day delivery. Any way, the system reduces the in store inventory and dollars tied up in slow moving stock.

If one measures the shaft and the seal exterior diameter - the seal may have been stocked in store.
