Newb from GR, MichiganHello all...I just recently picked up a 49 cub from a local farmer. I've been a hotrodder for most of my life so this is a nice change of pace. I have been wanting to restore/refurb an antique tractor for some time now. My grandfather had a large farm in northwestern Ohio were I spent my summers. He was an IH man to the bone so naturally so am I:-) Sadly he passed away in 2001. After talking it over with my wife,we both thought it would be a nice tribute to my gramps and restore an IH and put his name on it. I've had the tractor now for about 3 weeks and have already made some good progress. I put a new radiator in it, rewired it, removed most of the grease, replaced the plug wires, changed all fluids and put a battery in it. Low and behold she started right up. To the best of my knowledge, it had not been started in over 10 years so I was very shocked. Since then I have been driving it around the yard, tinkering with it and fixing minor things and noting what needs to be addressed yet. Shortly I will begin the disassembly process and then the real fun begins. Here's some pics of when I first brought it home. This site has already been a big help to me and I'm sure it will continue to do so in the future.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. My wife says I don't listen to her. - - - - - - - - Or something like that! http://www.cubtug.com

Re: Newb from GR, MichiganWelcome to the group. Dedicating your Cub to the memory of your grandfather is a great idea.
Why not take a weekend getaway with the wife and drive down to Tipton Indiana for the Central Indiana Cubfest September 17th - 18th. There's a lot to learn about Cubs and you will meet some fantastic folks. I don't believe in taking the bull by the horns. I took a goat by the horns once and that was enough excitement for me.

Re: Newb from GR, MichiganWelcome,
It is great to have another member from Michigan. I was in Grand Rapids last weekend and I enjoy the west side of the state. The most fun is trying to figure out what someone else has done to the tractor over the years and it looks like you will have your work cut out for you, starting with the rear tires. Enjoy your tractor and do not forget that their is plenty of help here Mark Experiance is knowing what NOT to do the next time.......

Re: Newb from GR, MichiganWelcome, Newb! It's always great to have new folks on board. Sounds like you've already made lots of progress, good deal! I'd bet the tractor came from a dairy farm, the vac. valve on the manifold was likely set up to run a milker during power outages.
Re: Newb from GR, MichiganWelcome to this Great Place. You will have a blast with this tractor in many ways.
I like the step, the carb choke, Plus the rear tire's. ENJOY. Be SAFE In my line of work

Re: Newb from GR, MichiganThanks everybody for the warm welcome! I see you guys have very quickly picked up some of the P.O. "mods" to the tractor.
The vacuum port is unique and I'm not quite sure what they used it for, however the notion that it may have been used on a dairy farm I think is very plausible especially in this area of Michigan. I figure it's going to serve a good purpose for me when I seafoam the engine, then it will be removed and plugged The back story I got with this tractor was that the farmer I bought it from bought it from a very poor family that had to sell it to make ends meet. This makes sense when you see some of the "mods" done to the tractor...clearly they were trying to save money. However, the choke cable addition seems contrary to that, because it's hard to get cheaper than a bent piece of rod. None the less, the tractor is finally getting the much needed attention it deserves now. I still have not decided if I'm going to "restore" it back to factory like condition or make a few of my own "changes" to it to make it my own. Which ever route I take I plan on posting alot of pics along the way to share.
