1980 184 lowboy came to visit

This is the first # lowboy I have had a chance to use, and it is in pretty good shape. I kinda like it, but kinda don't. It sits funny after being on F-Cubs for so long. It is also hard for me to get use to the balloon tires. The front tires are worn smooth. Lights, hydraulics, mower works fine. It starts and runs good too. It has sat for a few years and has some of the normal blow-by they have after sitting.

It came to me with a full set of manuals and a box of goodies. Electrical tune-up kit from IH as well as front and rear main seals and 3 new sets of D21 plugs.

The rear main does leak quite good. The carb seems to be in great shape. It does need a new fuel line and came with a new fuel bowl. It also has the complete 3 pt hitch assembly.

The owner is out of work and wants me to fix it up so that it can be sold, or if he goes back to work, so that he can use it.

One thing I have not figured out yet. Is there a secret to pulling the knob up that switches the hydro from belly mount to 3pt hitch?

Can't answer your question on the hydro valve, but I can tell you that rear main seal is a pain in the back side to change.

that center knob on the hydraulics, is a pain. i had my 184 for a couple of years, i figured it out teh day i sold it. . Dont remember for sure what it was. Know it was simple. Like pull, push, slide or something like that. Felt like an idiot when i did figure it out.

Yup Gary, just at a glance it looks as though it will be a job. Not near as much fun as on a F-CUB.

I pressure washed it last night just before dark, so I need to go look at it again in the daylight. I am going to run it hard for a bit with a good dose of seafoam, to see what happens with the blowby. Shake out the cobwebs a bit.

Not wanting to jump in too deep till I am sure what all will need to be done. With him out of work, I need to be sure to get anything I invest into it, out of it.

John, the sticker says to pull it up. I have not played with it yet, but might try in a bit.

I have a 79' lowboy 184 and my hydralic was alittle hard at first but with some PB blaster it should come loose. Not much more then just a push and pull action.

Dale, you probably already know, but don't be surprised to see that new IH seal fit loose in the same rear retainer that the cubs use,R2. If it does, Phil is working on a new improved retainer with an added feature(snap ring) to prevent any possible movement of seals. He should be posting soon about his progress and any added cost involved.

Thanks Rick. This 184 has needed the rear seal for a while. The fellow that dropped it off has owned it for 4 yrs, and he got a box of stuff with it including the seals. The box has a date of the early 90's on it. Not sure when the ill fitting seals began to be produced.

Not going to happen any time soon. I do not have any $$ for incidentals on it, and with him out of work, I am not real keen on investing my money into his tractor.

We shall see how things progress

Phil's rear seal fix works great on the 184. When Phil returned mine it was a nice tight fit and slid right into place with a little grease. Hasn't leaked a drop since so I am really pleased.
Changing the rear seal was not a big investment, but pulling covers off a tractor certainly offers opportunities to spend! It's hard not to replace the clutch or the U-Joint while you already have it out of the tractor.
