Farmall Cub

Hi all. I've always liked Farmall Cubs and always told myself that "one of these days". Well today was the day. I picked a 1949 Cub today and I'm very excited about it. It's a basic tractor with no extras, but it runs very good and looks great. It has the original headlights a rear light (I was told). The hood has been cut though to access the generator, but I'm okay with that. I don't want to paint it because I think it looks great in it's work clothes. The rear tires are near new, but the fronts are worn and mis-matched. I'm wanting to eventually find a snow plow and belly mower for it. I'll post some picture tomorrow.

I would appreciate any knowledge on my new tractor and I would love to find downloadable manual.

Thanks for the welcome! Here's some pictures I took today.

I'm wanting to put a snow plow on it. I don't have a lift handle yet or a snow plow. Which parts do I need for a complete assembly including the lift arm parts? I've seen some stuff for sale, but I'm not sure if it's what I need.

This tractor doesn't have hydraulics but I would be interested in knowing what I needed for that as well. I know nothing about these tractors yet, but it looks to me like it has a place for hydraulics right behind the engine. IT also looks like there is a place for a manual lift arm for the front and the rear.

I forgot to mention that I bought a new battery for it today, but the charging system isn't doing it's thing. Is there a post that I can go to to read about how to fix it?

Welcome to the Forum! If you click on "manuals" on the toolbar as John suggested, you can find a GS-1411 service manual which you can either print out or just read through as you need to. You will also want to look at the preventive maintenance manual. It may be time to change all the fluids, grease it up, oil the fan and generator (if applicable). Feel free to ask any questions, we may have a few of our own in order to help you out.

Hi from GA. have fun with your new cub. the hydralics aint that hard to do. you will need a touch control unit and a pump and lines and then your all set. and if you need help well this is the place!

Welcome to the forum! I see you are just up the road from me. I'm 65 miles southwest of you in Harrison just west of Cincy and Bigdog is about 60 miles northeast of you .

Check with Ralph for a hydro unit. He is a good source for used Cub parts. He is just across the ohio River in Florence Ky. http://www.ralphscubs.com

Thanks for the help! I found an Owner's Manual and a Preventative Maintenance Manual. Is there also a Service Manual?

Today, I greased the zerk fittings on the steering, changed the engine oil, changed the oil in the air filter bowl and sprayed every bolt with penetrating oil. I was surprised that there was no oil filter....After reading through one of the manuals, I realized that there IS an oil filter and I have to go back and clean it. Do I have to replace the filter or is it re-usable and where can I get one if I need one? I also used the wrong oil. I used 5W-30 instead of SAE-20. I need to clean the air filter also because I wasn't sure how to go about it.

I need all of the help and advise I can get!

That's great to know that it isn't too difficult. I'm not sure if I'll need it or not though. I live in town and I don't have a lot of land to use my Cub. It's mostly a toy but I do want to use it to shovel my drive, work my garden and perhaps a little mowing. Does the manual lift work okay for this stuff? I want keep the tractor old. I want to add as little new parts as necessary because I plan on taking it to shows just as it is. Money IS an object so keep that in mind. I don't have a lot so I have to pick and choose what I do with it.

That's good to know! Do you guys ever go to any shows? I plan on the Corn Festival in my hometown of Wilmington and hopefully a few more.

A manual lift will do fine for what you want. A good complete unit can sometimes be found for around $100.00 if you keep an eye out for one.

The oil you used will be okay. You need to replace the filter. You can get one at NAPA.

Oh yea, one more thing! I seen where a lot of guys have names for their Cubs. Well, I've named about everything I've owned and this Cub is no exception. It was a toss up between Reno (named after my favorite dog that got shot in deer season) or Willard (which is the name of the old timer that I got the Cub from). After looking at the Cub for a good while, the name Willard seems to fit the bill so that's it's new name.
