Change it or leave it as is?Emmit has some problems. I am considering leaving it just cause that is the way he fixed it or replacing the thing. What would you do?

Re: Change it or leave it as is?Wow! That's a lot of weld!!! I have mixed feelings on this one. From a pure safety aspect I'd say change it. But, it's obvious that the welds have been there a long time and unless they show any signs of failure they are no doubt very strong. If you plan to work the tractor I'd say change it. If it is going to be a toy only then it obviously has a story to tell and I'd tend to leave it like it is.
If you opt to leave it, inspect it often for signs of cracking. Bigdog
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. My wife says I don't listen to her. - - - - - - - - Or something like that! http://www.cubtug.com
Re: Change it or leave it as is?I don't plan on ever really working it. Just to ride around in and maybe pull a trailer sometime. I plan on putting the front and rear cultivators on it but never really plowing it.
I am really leaning on replacing that piece but just wasn't quite sure on it.
Re: Change it or leave it as is?I agree with Big Dog on this one. It is a lot of weld, but being a ship welders son I can tell you I have seen some pretty welds that don't hold, and some that last forever. Some of that could even be cleaned up and painted over. If you don't plan on working that tractor hard then my opinion is leave it alone and inspect it often. But, all of our opinions aside it listen to your intuition. If it says replace it, then replace it. You will feel much better about it in the long run.
Re: Change it or leave it as is?The second picture shows what may well be a crack on the edge of the flange near the weld. Even with all the weld I would be leary of it holding uo, The crack could go in a different direction.
I don't believe in taking the bull by the horns. I took a goat by the horns once and that was enough excitement for me.

Re: Change it or leave it as is?I would say split the tractor, and have the part magna fluxed. It will show if there are any cracks forming. If it is going to only be a parade tractor, I'd say it should be OK if no major cracks are forming. But even if it checks out OK, I'd locate a replacment and change it out at the first sign on problems.

Re: Change it or leave it as is?Replace it Terry. If you're ever on a road cruise and it gives up......you'd be in a world of hurt. Shouldn't be too hard to find another one.
Re: Change it or leave it as is?Replace it, you never know when or where or who will be on it .
Possibly grandkids. Phil "Work Hard ,Play Often,Care Always"
Re: Change it or leave it as is?Terry, I have a good housing if you decide to replace it. It will be so cheap, you will think that you stole it!!!!

Re: Change it or leave it as is?That looks like brazing. It is a good way to repair castings, but rarely will be as strong as the unbroken casting.
Luck favors those who are prepared
Re: Change it or leave it as is?Change it. When it breaks, even if no one is hurt, there will be additional (expensive) damage.
I have an excuse. CRS.
Re: Change it or leave it as is?Terry:
Replace it for all the above reasons. However -- since Emmet has a history .. it would make sense to hang on to the casting. Confusion breeds Discussion which breeds Knowledge which breeds Confidence which breeds Friendship
